EDITOR’SNOTE

Not sure if anyone else used to do this, but as a child I enjoyed cutting my dolls’ hair. It wasn’t drastic (some toy boxes at friends’ houses were filled with Barbies with crew cuts!), and my dolls were elegantly styled. It never progressed to me wanting to be a hairdresser, but I’ve now found something that gives me the same sense of satisfaction: “coiffing” my dogs’ hair. I have three dogs, and they used to get shorn every couple of months; but for a couple of weeks afterwards they’d look really unattractive. After one parlour session, I heard a boy in the neighbourhood say, “What ugly dogs!” Which was a pity because they’re very sweet really! Anyway, I then started experimenting. My attempt with the electric shearer wasn’t good – they looked awful. But after a bit of practice I now do quite a good job with a pair of scissors. We only had horses growing up, but over the years in Singapore we’ve had cats, hamsters, fish, rabbits, turtles and dogs. They’ve all been a big part of the kids’ growing-up process, and I’ve surprised myself how much I’ve loved having them. Well, maybe not the hamsters … In this pet-friendly issue, we look at options for adoption, owner recommendations and a cat charity run by volunteers. Pets are a big commitment, and if you’re transient or not sure how long you’ll be in Singapore, it’s a difficult choice. You can ship them with you, however, and you can also choose to foster a pet instead. Talking of recommendations, you still have two weeks to vote for your favourite businesses in our Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s a way to give those who are doing a good job a pat on the back – so please do spend the 12 or so minutes on the survey by visiting expatliving.sg/ readerschoice – and remember, you could be rewarded with two business class flights to London or a luxury staycation!

Best Letter We want to hear from you! Send us your thoughts on the magazine, or on any subject under the sun. For being the first to give us feedback on our recent cruise event, we’ll be sending Janet Garland a bottle of champagne.

STYLISH CLINIC

Your style clinic on 22 September was amazing! Caroline from Arete Culture and Danielle from Just Anthony were very professional in their presentations, and the Irish food was so tasty. I hope you’re going to continue to arrange other fun things for us in the future. – Zuzi Wahlgren Ed: Good news is that the delicious Irish goodies can be ordered at inish-bia. myshopify.com.

COOL CRUISING

Thank you for hosting such a fantastic cruise on Eagle Wings . The whole evening was an absolute pleasure for myself and the friends I came with, and represented the professionalism that I have come to expect from Expat Living . The food and wine were outstanding and kept on coming!

WHICH BLACK AND WHITE?

We have followed Expat Living for years – before we mo v e d t o Singapore, and even since we have moved on.

– Janet Garland

It’s great! Now we’re looking to create a little piece of Singapore in our new home by painting part of it like a traditional black- and-white house. Have you ever come across specific names or codes for the official black- and-white colours? The black in particular seems unique. – Grant Hauber Ed: No specific names or codes, sorry. According to Jane Iyer from Jane’s Tours (janestours.sg), the traditional white was a plaster called Madras chunam , made according to an Indian technique of mixing egg whites, jaggery (coarse sugar), shell lime and water, with possible variations. The black came fromdark brown teak that turned black when injected with creosote. So, whichever modern paint shades evoke those materials for you should do the trick.

My family and I had a brilliant time at the EL event on the to-die-for Eagle Wings . Perfect cruising conditions, excellent food and drink, and good company – who could ask for more? It was one of the best social nights we’ve had in a long while. – Bernard, Chris and Clare Dunraven Ed: Upcoming events include workshops on product photography, jewellery-making and making your own Christmas wreath, just in time for the festive season. However, it has become increasingly clear that many people believe the company to be a part of NTUC FairPrice. “While we think NTUC FairPrice is great, we’re not affiliated with them in any way,” explains owner Chantal Travers. “Other people come here expecting to find a dusty old antique shop – and we’re definitely not that either!” In fact, FairPrice Antique is a vibrant furniture shop selling top-quality, hand- crafted, artisanal, unique, statement Chinese furniture, including antique, vintage and new pieces, ceramics, accents and homewares. Chantal says, “We pride ourselves on the quality and affordability of our pieces. Everything we sell comes from northern China, where traditional craftsmanship, materials, artwork and finish is tip-top.”

H idden between busy Lornie and Thomson Roads is Jo Furniss’s two-storey house, an oasis of calm – and deceptively big. The entrance hall leads to a huge open-plan living and dining area, then through to the outdoor seating spot, large pool and garden. Before settling down to chat, she prepares a coffee for me – a delicious Blue Batak coffee, in fact, brought back from Sumatra. Her husband Mark is in the coffee business, which has seen them live in Africa and Switzerland, with two stints in Singapore for good measure. Leaving the UK in 2002, Jo and husband Mark first moved to West Africa. “When we met, he was studying for an MBA and I was working at the BBC in Birmingham. He’d just spent five years living in East Africa, and had told me all these glamorous stories about living there. We got engaged and then he was offered a job in Cameroon, which admittedly was far less glamorous, but an exciting start to our adventures abroad.” With no children

at that time, they formed a close group of friends and were out every weekend. “There was nothing to do there but come up with these crazy adventures, like hunting for waterfalls, so it was a great experience.” Jo continued to work as a journalist, freelancing mainly for the BBC. After a posting to Ethiopia fell through at the last minute, they moved to Singapore in 2004, choosing to live close to the Botanic Gardens. But their Singapore adventure only lasted two years before they transferred to Zurich, Switzerland, the location of Mark’s company’s head office. Both Lydia and Frank were born in Switzerland, and they spent seven years there before a relocation to Singapore was proffered in 2013. “I was happy to come back, to be honest; it felt easy as we knew what we were moving to, even though many of our friends had already left.”

Deciding at first on a shiny modern condo in Thomson, they took an apartment on the 31st floor, with great views (“my husband particularly loved it”). However, Jo andMark are bothwhat they call “country people”; “we love greenery, and I also prefer having my feet on the ground.” That’s why they then moved to this house close to MacRitchie Reservoir, in 2015. The house is situated adjacent to Bukit Brown Chinese Cemetery, and has the National Equestrian Centre literally behind its garden. Jo admits she’s become even more of a nature lover while living here. “We get so many birds in the garden and surrounds, I’ve pretty much become a twitcher! We went on an organised bird walk recently and learnt all about the different bird songs. The garden is full of different songs through the day and evening; it’s lovely to hear.”

Opposite page: Jo loves the painting above the dining table – “I find it very

benevolent” – though the children are scared of it.

Mark is a whisky fan, so there’s a fine collection under the stairs, including a bottle he picked up from their recent holiday to the Orkney Islands. The cabinet is from Lee’s Antiques Right: Jo picked up the blue console from Woody Antique House, where she also bought their outdoor sofa. “I like it there; they’re really easy to deal with.” The cabinet is a cutlery canteen bought from auction house HotLotz.

Having to initially downsize from their large house in Switzerland to their initial condo in Singapore, the move to the house instigated a little more upsizing. Most of the pieces, however, are from their postings in other countries. “We’ve got pieces from everywhere; for example, the Bamileke side tables outside we got from Cameroon. At the time I bought them, they were quite rare to see; now you can spot them all over the place!” Jo’s also no stranger to picking up second-hand pieces, including the large Swiss cabinet in the hallway. “Second-hand shops in Switzerland are normally found in people’s barns, and I used to go quite a lot to pick up pieces. You never knew what you’d find.”

Clockwise from top left: Lydia worked really hard to tidy up her room for the shoot – “she’s a hoarder so it was a challenge to clear away some stuff,” says Jo. Lydia’s roller skates take pride of place on a cabinet in her room. The puppet is from Burma. “The kids are terrified of him as well, but I love him!” Jo often finds herself reading in this spot when Mark is away. She picked up the pottery on a trip in Cameroon. “I really like the raw look, before they fire them.” The shelving unit is from Pasardina Fine Living in Dempsey.

Writer’s retreat Despite the relocation from Zurich to Singapore, Jo has managed to write, and have published, her first fiction novel, All the Little Children . The book, which centres on a family camping trip that takes a dark turn, became a number one bestseller on Amazon soon after being released in August. Jo has now not only finished the draft of the second book, but is starting to think about a third. Her move from journalist to author was an organic one. Having struggled to balance expensive childcare in Zurich with a desire to return to work, Jo decided instead to study a two-year Masters degree in Professional Writing by distance learning from Falmouth University. “At first I thought I would write

non-fiction books, but I’d done narrative modules at the start and I just got really into it.” As part of her course, she had to write a 1,000-word piece, which then formed the nucleus for her current book. “We lived on the edge of this forest in Zurich, and I used to walk a huge amount with the children, one in the carrier the other in the stroller. I couldn’t get this idea out of my head of being left on your own, having to look after your children; it kept going round inmy mind.” At the end of the course, Jo had to decide between non-fiction, screenwriting or fiction. “My tutor told me to do what would stretch me the most, and that was fiction. I did that and developed my book.” Her book was also born partly from the frustration of motherhood, and the social dialogue around this.

Opposite: Jo picked up her air plants from Spa Flora, on Thomson Road. “I love them; they’re so sculptural, and the one above the table reminds me of Tina Turner’s hair!” The cushions on the sofa in the background were purchased from a museum gift shop, the outdoor

furniture is from Woody Antique House.

“You’re never allowed to make a normal human- being mistake as a mother, which is a terrible pressure. When my daughter was born, in 2008, there were all these celebrities and bloggers who present themselves as the perfect parents, and I just thought enough was enough. My book is provocative – the main character is not always likeable because she’s successfully running a business and household. She’s exhausted, and that shows. I wanted to write a character who epitomised the kind of woman that the Daily Mail will praise one week and slate the next.” Jo’s second book, Trailing Spouse , is set in Singapore, and focuses on a “rather shiny woman”, living in a fancy condo on Sentosa. Her husband travels more and more and she has reason to suspect he’s playing

around; yet, as she looks into it, she discovers something much darker. “This novel is more complicated to write because there are two narratives to weave together. It focuses on the way dependency on a spouse can make you feel vulnerable.” The book will be released in August 2018. It seems unlikely she’ll be taking much of a break between books. “My agent is already asking me about book three!” Following the excitement around the launch of All the Little Children , Jo plans to pause to consider the next project. “Writing a novel is a huge commitment. Plus, I’mkeen to spend the next half-term holiday enjoying Singaporewith visitors andmy kids. It was even nice to spend yesterday’s National Day tidying the house in readiness for the photoshoot!”

Inspiration These two readers tell us why they called on the help of home styling and interior design experts to pull together their perfect home.

Vanessa Rademaker, Portuguese Our bedroom furniture was 13 years old and, although it was still in good shape, we decided it needed a refresh. We purchased a new mattress and bedframe, I began looking for mirrored bedside tables; I purchased a pair of stacked glass ball lamps, thinking they would fit with the new bed. I also began looking into having luxurious bedding made. I reached out to Chlöe from E&A Interiors as I liked that she sourced high-quality, more unique fabrics from smaller vendors in the US and Europe. We met and discussed what I was looking for, before she came to see the space in person. The master bedroom is large, brown and rather dark all around. Given it’s a rented property, we couldn’t change the brown fixtures, but Chlöe

had concepts for the bedding, along with other recommendations on how to achieve my desired outcome of a bright, fresh look with luxurious fabrics and textures, while also bearing in mind I was budget conscious. The project became about striking a balance between the new elements such as the soft furnishings, rug and footstool, and giving the existing furniture a new lease on life. Existing furniture was sprayed in white and the mirrored accents that I had been searching for were added. The dressers got mirrored tops, while the bedside tables also got mirrors on the drawers and new glass drawer knobs. Bed cushions were made, matching lampshades added, as well as wallpaper to brighten the room. I had a chair and ottoman re-upholstered in a stylish combination of fabrics, and a soft rug and footstool were added to complete the look. A vintage French country lingerie chest with new mother-of-pearl drawer knobs and pulls was initially sprayed a darker blue, but I found it to be too intense and dark for the room. Chlöe agreed and didn’t hesitate to send it back and have it re- sprayed in a lighter shade. Chlöe was hands on every step of the way, and she was also open and responsive when I asked her questions and wanted to share my ideas. She has a keen eye for design and what does and doesn’t work in a particular space; a “cookie cutter” interior design approach won’t work in Singapore given the peculiarities of room layouts here. The vendors and contractors Chlöe works with are top-notch professionals, and every detail was well executed. She did such a good job on the bedroom that we immediately started working on updating our formal sitting area, which has turned out beautifully. Every time I have visitors, they comment on the beautiful space and I get all the credit!
