SEPTEMBER 2021 EXPAT LIVING: ADVERTORIAL

The House system has been a staple of British schooling for centuries, originating fromthe physical boarding houses where students lived during term time, and evolving into a byword for student teams that connect age groups. Throughout this time, there has always been the idea that a House is a home in itself, populated by a close-knit “family” with a unique bond. Added to that, there is a certain magic to a House; you need only to look at the enduring appeal of the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter to know young people are drawn to this kind of kinship. THE 8 HOUSES OF TANGLIN Tanglin Trust School’s House system dates back to 1981. In that year, Tanglin Preparatory School, Raeburn Park School and Weyhill Preparatory School merged to form Tanglin Infant and Junior schools on Portsdown Road. Four decades on, the Tanglin House system has been unified across all three schools, and each of the House names – Claymore, Cameron, Raeburn, Alexandra, Weyhill, Wessex, Winchester and Portsdown – honours a significant location in the school’s rich history. As readers who live in Singapore’s historic areas and houses know all too well, they have many talking points and stories to tell. Inhabited by heritage and brought alive by the generations who lived there, they develop a family narrative and offer a spiritual home. So, with the magic of the sorting hat at our fingertips, we ask the age old question, “If these walls could talk, what would they say?” as we step inside the history of the Tanglin Houses to discover their character, shield and colourway. Claymore “Endurance is one of our key strengths” History: Claymore is the area of Singapore where “Miss Griff” first founded the school in 1925 within the Tanglin Club’s grounds. Beginning with just five students, the school went from strength to strength, to become the Tanglin we know today. Claymore reminds us that humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary accomplishments. Icon: With a crossed pair of Scottish Claymore broadswords as its icon, the House character is ever determined; those who wear the shield enthusiastically look to the future with ambition. Cameron “Courage and perseverance define us”

FIONA RITSON delves into the history and iconography of the eight Houses at Tanglin Trust School. If you were still at school, which one would suit you best?

History: The Cameron Highlands Boarding School was opened by Miss Griff in 1934, and staff and students encountered much adversity there. In 1942, during World War II, the school was forced

to close during the Japanese occupation, while Miss Griff and several of her colleagues were held in Changi Prison. In 1948, the Malayan Emergency brought more hardship to overcome together. Icon: The fortitude, adaptability and vitality of this House spring from the alpine setting, which gives the energy for growth and renewal.

When Raeburn Park School moved onto a neighbouring site in 1976, the two schools joined forces. This collaboration was fully realised in 1981 when all three schools amalgamated to form Tanglin Infant and Tanglin Junior schools. Icon: The flaming torch symbolises connection across communities and through generations since Tanglin’s inception in 1925; the blue represents open communication and clarity of thought. Tanglin Trust School has launched Tanglin ’ s Forest School Programme (FSP) for nursery-age children. First developed in Europe, this model brings learning outdoors so children can gain creative, personal and social skills, and an appreciation of the natural world. The programme will complement the after-school co-curricular forest adventure programme where children in Reception to Year 2 experience outdoor learning within the greenery of Wessex Estate. The FSP also connects effectively with the Curiosity Approach, for which the school is the first in Asia to receive accreditation. This approach encourages children to use authentic materials, appreciate the natural environment and use learning spaces as the third teacher. Tanglin Trust School ’ s FSP is run on a site within the school grounds by qualified Level 3 teachers and facilitators who ensure that all activities are safely managed and age-appropriate. Impressive Scores

With a 100 percent pass rate in this year’s IB, the Class of 2021 has achieved Stamford American I n t e r n a t i o n a l School’s strongest performance yet. Nineteen students scored 40 points or higher – considered

an outstanding achievement – with two of them scoring 44 out of the full 45 points. The school’s average IB score was 35, three points higher than a year ago, while the exam average of 5.6 was also higher than any previous years, with 29 percent of students achieving the rigorous bilingual IB diploma. Meanwhile, Stamford’s Advanced Placement results recorded an average score of 3.3, and over 70 percent of scores were a 3 or above, considered high academic standing by universities around the world. sais.edu.sg

Tanglin Trust School Lost in Hack-lation is a student-led event where 70 students from Years 7 to 12 were invited to come up with innovative ideas to overcome modern communication issues by using technology. Although it pivoted to an online event due to COVID-19 restrictions, the students were undaunted and coded creative solutions to answer questions such as “How would you improve global interactions?” Industry experts such as Niall Hogan, Managing Director at Ogury, and Geoff Leeming, Founder &Consultant at Pragma Singapore, were also invited to share case studies and ideas. Andy Subramanian, Year 13 student and co-organiser of the hackathon said, “It was enriching and gave me a different perspective about the world at large, particularly how we have become a truly borderless world over the past 1.5 years. Even though we are travelling less due to border closures, our bonds with family and friends living in other countries are now closer due to technology. I enjoyed the part where we got to interact with tech experts in the real world!” Tanglin’s Director of Technology, Keith Rutherford, adds, “We saw dozens of different creative ideas that were judged on programming, presentation and the creativeness of their solution. Interacting with the students also gave me fresh perspectives – I thoroughly enjoyed the event!”

XCL World Academy Every year, the International Baccalaureate Organisation offers an MYP Student Innovator’s Grant to Grade 9 and 10 students, thus providing a unique opportunity for students to build the skills they need to become socially conscious leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs the world needs today. XCL World Academy (XWA) students Devika (Grade 11), Edwin (Grade 10) and Neil (Grade 11) have been awarded the MYP Student Innovators Grant for 2021. This is one of only 27 grants given among thousands of applicants worldwide. Devika submitted a powerful proposal for tackling food waste in Singapore. She expanded the research, planning and interventions she designed for her MYP Personal Project campaign to reduce the food waste at XWA’s cafeteria. She enjoyed working on this project and wanted to find ways to expand it to impact the wider community. Neil and Edwin worked together on Innovation Circuit, their project that designs bespoke support for schools’ STEAM events. In collaboration with the participating school, the duo would consult and plan the event, down to providing the necessary promotional materials and educational workshops. Part of their setup includes a “hardware lab” with resources such as Arduino and Lego Mindstorm kits that could be loaned to schools for their events. The pair plan to start collaborating with schools in Singapore and have ambitious goals to expand their reach across the region.

LIFE & FAMILY

We take a look at how one school in Singapore nurtures its early learners beyond the classroom. Laying Foundations BY PATRICEA CHOW

Established in 1925, Tanglin Trust School is the oldest British international school in Southeast Asia. Tanglin is inspected following UK Ofsted British Schools Overseas (BSO) standards; the Infant, Junior and Senior Schools have been repeatedly judged “Outstanding”, which is the highest possible grade. At its Infant School (comprising Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2), it aims to lay the foundations for the development of each child through a nurturing and child-centred approach. To this end, Tanglin’s classrooms, facilities, outdoor areas and curriculum are all designed to capture the imagination and individual strengths and interests of children, and cultivate in them a lifelong love of learning. This is underpinned by a commitment to support their social, emotional and cultural awareness. Here we dig a little deeper into three facets of Tanglin’s Early Years education. #1 Fostering curiosity Did you know that Tanglin was the first school in Asia to be awarded the Curiosity Approach accreditation? This was complemented by the launch of the Tanglin Forest School Programme, an outdoor-based learning model for children from as young as nursery age, in August 2021. Both approaches encourage children to use authentic materials, appreciate the natural environment and use learning spaces as the “third teacher” to support play, exploration and wonder in learning. The school considers these factors to be of the utmost importance for children in their early years, so they can develop their academic, creative, personal and social skills. There’s also a new state-of-the-art playground that comes complete with a Mud Kitchen, Water Play Areas and Music Shed for students to get creative. #2 Creating a holistic environment Tanglin’s Infant School curriculum promotes personal, emotional and social development. The school explains that the focus is on developing children’s self confidence and self-awareness, forming relationships with peers and teachers, and understanding how to manage their feelings and behaviours.

Discover Tanglin’s Nursery at an Open Morning Parents will get to see howpersonalised curriculum for children aged three to four years is delivered by Tanglin’s experienced teamof educators. Victoria Thomas, Tanglin’s Head of Nursery, will host the sessions, whichwill include a short talk and a tour of the classrooms and facilities at the Nursery. Open Morning will be held as soon as Singapore’s Safe Management Measures allow. Register your interest at tts.edu.sg/admissions/visit-tanglin/discover-nursery-at-tanglin. that will provide a wide range of new facilities in 2022, including new spaces for infant children, an Aquatics centre with an Olympic length swimming pool, a 15-metre climbing wall by Walltopia, a 1,300-square-metre gymnastics centre, an athletics development gym and even a co-working space for parents who need a place to take calls or catch up on their work while waiting for their little ones to finish their school day at Tanglin. In addition, Tanglin believes that physical and creative development promotes a sense of wellbeing. This may take place in a classroom, sports hall, the swimming pool or at the Forest School activity area. #3 Looking to the future A new building is currently under construction at Tanglin

the most basic things that I take for granted at home such as clean water and a bed. I’ve been playing Touch Rugby for four years and through the Touch community, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and made many new friends. I travelled to Brisbane to play in a tournament with my friends and I’ll never forget that. I don’t have a clear idea of what I’d like to do, but if I could do anything, I would love to travel the world and start a business.

Maia, Year 13, Singaporean

I ’ v e b e e n a t Tanglin for six years. I’m currently in my final year and I’m the Head Girl 2021-22.

One of the things that I love most about Tanglin is the supportive community. I’m

grateful for my teachers, who always go above and beyond to help me achieve my academic goals. They’ve given me many opportunities to take on leadership roles, mentor younger students and pursue my interests beyond the classroom. I love problem-solving and challenging myself so my favourite subject is Maths. It links very well with Physics, where I can apply my mathematical knowledge to real life situations. The school trip to Australia in Year 11 was the major highlight for me. Trekking through the outback for eight days was extremely hard work but it felt like a great achievement when we arrived back at the base. That trip taught me to appreciate

Hannah and Adam Richardson, British; Ella (4) and Emilia (2)

Adam and I have been living in Singapore since September 2011. Ella joined Nursery Class 8 at Tanglin last August and is currently in the Snails class. Her teacher, Mr Pyatt, and his teaching assistants have created an open, nurturing and supportive environment for children to explore and engage in a fun and creative way. Class areas are open-plan and use open-ended play to allow little ones to use their imaginations and take themselves on learning experiences in a natural way. T h e s c h o o l ’s w i d e r a n g e o f extracurricular activities further feed curious and eager minds and bodies. They include kids multi-sport, languages including French and Mandarin, music, and Centre Stage Creative Drama and Centre Stage Musical Theatre. Nursery has Pedal Power, which enables Ella to learn how to ride a balance bike, and the Tanglin Forest School Programme, where Ella has been immersed in learning outdoors and connecting with nature. The school’s mini-bus facility allows me to be home with my youngest and not worry about the school run. Despite being only four, Ella enjoys going on the bus; all credit goes to the school for making it a positive experience. We’re still new to Tanglin but we immediately felt part of the school community. The children have a sense of identity through their Houses, which stays with them through their entire school life; Tanglin will also ensure that Emilia has the same House allocation so our family will forever be Team Cameron! On House Fridays, Ella can see fellowHouse members around the school; she can find fellowship with other students whether they be in Nursery or older years. There’s a class rep system in place for parents to connect and build a wider Tanglin family. Parents can connect and be informed of important class info and special event days. This is valuable, comforting and encouraging, knowing that we’ve given our child the best start.

Vicky and Charlie Mansour, British; Barnaby (12), Tabitha (10) and India (7)

In August 2021, we moved to Singapore fromHong Kong and joined Tanglin Trust School at the start of the school year – Barnaby in Year 7, Tabitha in Year 6 and India in Year 3.

The children were at a British international school in HK. Before that, we were in London, so we wanted to continue in the British System. Tanglin stood out from the start. We did a virtual tour and were blown away with the facilities and the opportunities that the children could gain here. We felt that they would all find aspects of Tanglin that they could enjoy and excel at. The children settled in from day one and are really enjoying their time at the school. Barnaby started doing Latin, French and Spanish this year and is thoroughly enjoying the Tanglin language programme. The children have been enjoying co-curricular activities such as basketball, rugby, rock climbing, Masterchef, netball, Tanglin Merlions swim training, gymnastics and Animation Club, to name a few. They’ve also been on school trips around Singapore after being unable to enjoy them for two years.

There has been limited access to the school grounds for parents due to COVID restrictions. However, this is rapidly changing and we recently were able to see Tabitha in her Year 6 performance, a real taster of the fantastic music and drama department. The school has lots of ways to make new parents feel included. There’s a class rep, class WhatsApp groups and an open-door policy with the teachers, who are helpful. Now, new Year 7 parents also have breakfast with the CEO and there’s a tour for Year 3 organised for third term. The school app is also a great tool – with the touch of a button you can find information about what’s happening in the coming weeks, order school lunches, or change going-home arrangements. As a family, we’re very happy with our choice, and we believe it can only get better!
