MAR 2016 EXPAT LIVING: PRESCHOOLS MINI GUIDE

PRESCHOOLS

St Joseph’s Institution International Victoria and Thomas Lodder, British India (8), Cosima (6) and Paloma (4)

India is in Grade 3 and has been at St Joseph’s Institution International for four-and-a-half years, Cosima is about to start Grade 1 after two full years in the preschool, while Paloma started in January. I’m loving being a member of the school community and have always felt very happy leaving my children to be guided by the teachers each day. We have been lucky to have kind, talented and experienced teachers, and as a result my children have thrived and are enthusiastic about learning. Parents are very quickly drawn into the school community and encouraged to contribute and participate in school activities and learning, which I like. Atmosphere is very important to me, and I think it’s a lovely feature of the school that each of the prep classrooms runs onto the playground and a covered deck at the back of each classroom allows the children to play outside regardless of weather. The playgrounds are adventurous for them too, with plenty of fun outdoor toys. I love the experience-based learning and find my children have responded very well to this. I also like the International Primary Curriculum and its global approach. The way each unit of work runs through all their subjects certainly makes it easier to support from home. I heard about St Joseph’s Institution International through family friends whose children were enrolled there. It just felt right when I walked around the school, and I enjoyed the warm and nurturing feel. I would highly recommend the preschool. It provides a wide range of learning experiences that give every child a chance to engage and thrive. The Virtues Project that each teacher is trained in is a real point of difference for me; it runs throughout the school as an integral part of the way the children are taught, developing in them the skills and qualities they need to be successful at school and, more importantly for me, in life.

MAY 2016 EXPAT LIVING: INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS MINI GUIDE

SCHOOLS

St. Joseph’s Institution International

Rosaline and John Wilson, Singaporean and Welsh Rhys (17)

In 2012, Rhys started high school (Grade 7) at SJI International, completing his IGCSE in 2015 (that’s Grade 10). He’s now in Grade 11 pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. I learnt of this school through my friend whose son went there, and also through newspaper reports about its success in IB results. I wanted my son to have the opportunity to be involved in sports and make friends in addition to having just an academic life. I wanted him to attend a school based on Christian values, and SJI International, being a Lasallian Catholic school, was the most suitable choice.

It also offered a better teacher- to-child ratio, and the teaching method ensures my son learns sufficiently. He is constantly inspired in the music programmes and has volunteered to perform on many occasions. The teachers are wonderful and committed – they will discuss at length my child’s strengths and weakness, suggest ideas and keep us informed of his progress. Rhys says that the teachers talk to him as an individual, encouraging him and challenging him. We particularly like that a good number of them come from other countries, which brings in international teaching standards.

The curriculum is great – we like the method of teaching, which includes getting the students to conduct research, write essays, and hold conversations on topics with classmates. My son has become more confident through all these. The school facilities are also excellent – it is well-equipped and has spacious grounds. We would strongly recommend SJI International to other families for its Christian values, the quality education, the international outlook, the fantastic teachers, the top facilities and the balanced curriculum.

LIFE & FAMILY

The research is now clear: music and the performing arts deliver myriad intellectual, social and emotional benefits to students. No longer viewed as supplementary subjects, they are a core part of the academic curriculums at international schools globally. We caught up with five students to find out what ignites their musical passion and how they benefit from it. Who’s Talent? Got

ON THE STAGE AT SJI INTERNATIONAL The performing arts are an intrinsic part of SJI International’s school culture, and students are provided with many opportunities to express themselves creatively both inside and outside the classroom. A foundation IGCSE course is offered in Grades 7 and 8 in Music and Drama, while IGCSE Music and Drama is taught in Grades 9 and 10. Students in Grades 11 and 12 undertake the IB Diploma Programme in the Visual Arts, Music and Theatre. All students are encouraged to participate in at least one extracurricular creative activity, selected from a range of music, drama and dance opportunities. Group activities include orchestra, choir, Brazilian samba drumming, ukulele, jazz band, brass ensemble and the musical theatre company. There’s also an instrumental tuition programme that offers private lessons for woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments. Students also have the opportunity to get involved in major school events, such as the bi-annual school production, Arts Week, Drama Night, Battle of the Bands, talent shows, the Singapore Chingay Parade and musical performances at various locations, including the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

SINGING Musical Passion:

Ledy loves singing – watch her perform just one song and her delight shines through. “This has been my passion since I started singing in church when I was young,” she says. “When I sing I feel overjoyed and extraordinary, and it makes me forget about my worries for a while.” She is immersed in talent-nurturing opportunities at SJI International, the International Baccalaureate Music programme being just the beginning. She has performed in school musicals (lead roles in Bugsy Malone in 2014 and in Hairspray this year), won first place in the “SJI International’s Got Talent” competition in 2015, and in March was a special guest at the performance of the Yale Alley Cats, a touring a capella group from the US. Outside of school, her list of achievements is impressive. Last year she

The value of music exams “Children gain many important life skills from music exams, including time management and discipline – and it’s a great chance to test performance skills. Those who find exams too intimidating may find holiday music camps ameaningful alternative; not only will they provide a memorable learning experience, they’re a fun way to spend a holiday!” – Bina Jung from Aureus Academy

played a lead role in Gelar Budaya , one of SMU’s largest annual musical productions; she has sung at the Indonesian Embassy for the Ambassador and his guests; and in 2014 she made the semi-finals of Crescendo, an inter-school music competition. “The best part of singing is that I get to entertain other people,” says Ledy. “I love the feeling when I make them feel happy – seeing the smiles on their faces shows me that they are enjoying my singing.”

JULY 2016 CITY GUIDE

St Joseph’s Institution International

The approach SJI International is a Lasallian Catholic school, welcoming students and families of all faiths. Set in a large green campus adjacent to theMacRitchie Reservoir Park, the Elementary school has 670 students and offers the International Primary Curriculum, with the inclusion of Singapore Maths and daily Mandarin. The High School’s 1,030 roll includes both Singaporean and many other nationalities, and follows the IGCSE and IB Diploma programmes. A word from a parent Cecile Collineau, French; Luc (14), Emma (12) and Alice (8) I wanted to find a school where the staff knows each child personally; something I definitely found at SJI International. I also discovered that Singapore Maths is taught in the Elementary School. It’s very intuitive and introduces math concepts gradually, but quite deeply. I’m also glad that my children are going to class with and creating great friendships with Singaporeans, which is important for integration in this country. The high school ethics of service to the community, academic excellence and respect for one another are very impressive – and the IB results obtained by the students are truly remarkable. Alice loves the kindness among the children; no one is mean to anyone else, and Emma says she loves the fact that SJI International is a very inclusive community where nobody is left out. Walking around the campus, you certainly feel a strong sense of community and respect among the students, staff and parents.

A word from a student Jonathan Platt (17), Grade 12, Canadian

chemistry teacher is wonderful – he engages us and genuinely cares about inspiring us to learn. The classroom is always open for discussion on any issues andwe are always welcome to give our opinions. The mix of local and international students sets this school apart. Our school’s almost unique position of a student body made up of both local and international students ensures that there are diverse spheres of thought. In ChallengeWeek, all Grade 11s organise a trip to a foreign country for a service-oriented task. This is done independently, andmy trip to a rural village in Laos taught memuch about the nature of poverty. The trip focused on helping to build an eco- bungalowtoprovidearegularsourceofincomeforthevillagers, andtogivetouristsasustainableoptionwhentravelling.Istayed withthevillagepeopleandlearnedabouttheircustomsandway of life, and how globalised tourismwas putting a stop to that. It really openedmy eyes to the effects that our everyday life can have on the people around us.
