LIFE & FAMILY

Tertiary BY PATRICEA CHOW Pathways to Did you know that students at Stamford American International School (SAIS) have multiple curriculum options when it comes to completing their studies? High School Principal OCKI FERNANDES explains. Tell us about the university preparation programme at SAIS. Our school offers a holistic education for students from two months to 18 years, with over 75 different nationalities, and each one of those students is treated as a unique individual and given the direction, counsel and support they need to create their unique future. To ensure that students have sufficient time, guidance and resources to make their best decisions, our four-year university preparation programme starts in Grade 9. This early introduction to life after SAIS gives our students a head start in working towards their academic aspirations. SAIS is an IB Continuum World School – our students graduate with a High School Diploma accredited by CIS/WASC. At the end of Grade 10, they get to make the choice for their academic pathway. This includes the option of completing their diploma by continuing with Stamford courses or choosing Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Business and Technology Education Council International (BTEC) courses. The Stamford and AP courses are year-long and may be taken either in Grade 11 or 12. The IB and BTEC are two-year courses. While the former provides students with a holistic approach to education, the latter is geared towards those wanting a more specific education in the areas of visual arts, music, acting or sports science. We’re the first and only international school in Singapore to offer the IB, AP and BTEC courses for students to complete high school. What are the different curriculum options for students to complete high school?

About Ocki Ocki has been an educator for 42 years, with teaching and administration experience in Africa, the Middle East and South America. He’s also an IB examiner, inspector, presenter and Authorisation Team Leader. Before joining SAIS in 2018, Ocki was High School Principal at Graded, The American School of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has qualifications from the University of the Witwatersrand, Harvard Business School and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Changing pathways can be complicated but can happen under the guidance of our Academic and College Counselors to ensure the students have the credits to graduate and still have a competitive chance of getting into a good tertiary institution. How else do you help prepare students for tertiary education? We’re also one of the few schools in Singapore with onsite SAT and ACT test centres, offering college preparatory tests for Grade 10 students onwards. Our dedicated Academic and College Counseling Team is tuned in to the requirements of universities all over the world; on average, Stamford students apply and are accepted to colleges and universities in 20 different countries. Stamford students are also able to get academic support at various levels from our Student Support Team, Academic advisors, Academic Dean and programme coordinators. If a student wants to switch programmes midway, will they be able to?

Stamford American International School is at 1 Woodleigh Lane. Find out more about its high school programmes by calling 6653 7907 or visiting sais.edu.sg.

LIFE & FAMILY

Leads Belonging Success to For this international school in Singapore, creating a sense of acceptance and connection among students is all important. When the scores for the 2021 IB Diploma Programme were released, students from Stamford American International School (SAIS) stacked up very well indeed against IB averages. Here are a few notable stats around the SAIS performance: • 10.4 percent increase in average exam scores, compared to a 4.8 increase globally. • 10 percent increase in pass rates (4.4 percent globally). • 9.2 percent increase in average diploma scores (5.3 percent globally). • 280 percent increase in IB scores of 40 and over (60 percent globally). • 90 percent of SAIS students were accepted by their first or second choice university. According to DR MARK WENZEL, the school’s Superintendent, SAIS believes that developing a sense of belonging in students is a key part of their success. This belonging relates to a feeling of acceptance and connection, not just among fellow students and teachers, but also among the school community. The approach echoes recent findings by the Student Experience Research Network in the US, which had this to say on the matter: “In every learning environment, students pick up on cues and signals about their belonging. When these messages support students’ belonging, they can learn freely. When these messages make students feel physically or emotionally unsafe, or cause students to question their belonging, their cognitive resources are diverted away from learning.” BY PATRICEA CHOW

Family backgrounds and traditions Dr Wenzel says, “As an international school with 75 nationalities, we make a conscious effort to learn about each student as an individual – their background, interests, hopes and dreams. In this way, we create a sense of connection between the student and the school. We seek to empower students with excellent teaching and a warm, supportive learning environment that inspires them to create their unique future.” For example, in classroom projects, students draw on family history and cultural traditions; and in morning meetings, they tell stories, listen to one another and reflect on values. They also get the chance to display their passions and talents in school activities, and the SAIS culture on the whole celebrates everyone’s participation. Encouraging student autonomy The school finds that allowing high school students to choose their pathway – from the IB Diploma Programme, Advanced Placement classes and the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Diploma programme – increases a student’s sense of belonging. Co-curricular activities enhance this feeling of connection; students who wish to establish their own clubs, for example, are supported by their advisors. Clubs such as Chinese Cultural Club, Dungeons & Dragons and the Positivity Project Club help create a shared purpose among like-minded peers with similar goals. In all, Stamford has more than 200 club and activity offerings across the school that allow students to learn leadership skills, work in diverse groups and grow both as individuals and as part of a team. In addition, teachers and coaches meet with students to help them grow physically, emotionally and academically.

To find out more, book a virtual tour of the school at sais.edu.sg/virtual-admissions-tour.

Tanglin Trust School has launched Tanglin ’ s Forest School Programme (FSP) for nursery-age children. First developed in Europe, this model brings learning outdoors so children can gain creative, personal and social skills, and an appreciation of the natural world. The programme will complement the after-school co-curricular forest adventure programme where children in Reception to Year 2 experience outdoor learning within the greenery of Wessex Estate. The FSP also connects effectively with the Curiosity Approach, for which the school is the first in Asia to receive accreditation. This approach encourages children to use authentic materials, appreciate the natural environment and use learning spaces as the third teacher. Tanglin Trust School ’ s FSP is run on a site within the school grounds by qualified Level 3 teachers and facilitators who ensure that all activities are safely managed and age-appropriate. St. Joseph’s Institution International

SJI International debaters have been leading the way since 2017 with the Lasallian Debate League. The annual student-led charity debate competition is organised by the SJII Debating Society and aims to raise awareness of and funds for humanitarian causes. This year, the debaters chose to shine a spotlight on mental health, with event proceeds going towards the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH). SAMH is a charity organisation that aims to reintegrate individuals with mental health issues back into society through community based mental health services that provide rehabilitative care and support for their families. Like last year, the COVID-19 situation in Singapore meant that debaters couldn’t physically participate in competitions. The fourth edition of the Lasallian Debate League had to be held virtually, which came with its technological challenges, including a global Zoommaintenance happening concurrently with the tournament!

Despite the obstacles, the team comprising IB students Natanya, Sher Mae, Riya and Megan, together with guidance from Mr Nicholson, successfully hosted the tournament on 28 and 29 August. The event saw around 300 participants from secondary schools and junior colleges across Asia debate motions that touched upon pertinent issues ranging from climate change to organ donation. As of writing, almost $3,000 has been raised through this initiative.

Stamford American International School R U OK is a mental wellbeing campaign at SAIS that provides support for its middle and high school students as they start questioning and understanding their place and value in society. The campaign encourages students to reach out to someone by asking “R U OK?”, listening, encouraging action and checking in. Previously held over a single day, it was held from 6 to 10 September this year.

Some key student leadership groups were involved as the core planning team. They produced advisory activities that engaged SAIS students and also increased their awareness of mental health. These included inspiration walls, creating podcasts, class movies, conversation corners and role-plays. The activities allowed for students’ choice and were driven by the students themselves. It provided an opportunity to deepen conversations, strengthen trust and increase wellbeing for every student. Chaeyeon Lee of Grade 8 explains her experience as part of the planning team: “R U OK allowed students to reach out to fellow students they didn’t know well. It’s a great opportunity for them to talk to someone they didn’t know before and understand their feelings by asking if they are okay. The experience of planning the campaign as well as participating in it helped me to become more mindful and respectful of other students. I really enjoyed it a lot.”

JANUARY 2022 ANNUAL KIDS’ GUIDE

In The Classroom

Stamford American International School

Sofia, Grade 12, Spanish

Every year, the overseas trips are an exciting time for all students and the Grade 10 field studies trip to Cambodia was personally the most memorable. It was shocking to learn about its history and talk to people who lived through it. While having lots of fun and bonding with friends, I learned about a different culture and history from mine. After the trip, our Humanities teachers taught us even more about what we had experienced in Cambodia, which gave us an even deeper understanding of the country. After SAIS, I’ll be studying aerospace engineering in university. I hope to contribute to making commercial space travel sustainable, autonomous and safe. I would also like to get a pilot’s licence!

I’ve been at SAIS for three and a half years and I’m currently in my senior year. I appreciate the

international diversity of SAIS that gives us the opportunity to learn from vastly different cultures. There’s incredible support from

teachers who get to know students and provide the support they may need. I know various teachers who I can easily talk to or ask for help at any time. There are endless opportunities offered by the school – you’re sure to find a club, CCA or sport to pursue whatever you’re interested in. In the case that there isn’t an activity for you, you’re given support to start a student-led club. Being able to try many different things has enabled me to discover my interests. I love Physics as I find it fascinating to learn about how things work. The teachers at SAIS also make me look forward to class as they create an engaging learning environment and are always approachable for any help.

We live within walking distance of SAIS but it was our online research and conversations with other parents that made us feel that Stamford was the right choice for Elias. Elias started attending the SAIS Early Learning Village (ELV) last January. He is very inquisitive and curious so we were looking for a play based, child-led and hands-on learning environment. ELV’s curriculum is specially designed for young learners following the Reggio Emilia approach. The teacher will follow Elias’s interest and expand on it in the classroom; this gives him the chance to take ownership of his own learning. There’s a balcony area attached to each classroom with lots of natural sunlight. The children can move freely between the balcony and the indoor classroom; Elias talks about “balcony play” all the time!

Mina Kaye and Wyatt Biessel, American; Elias (3)

Elias’s social-emotional skills have flourished under the guidance of his current teacher, Ms Ioanna, in just a few short months. She connects with us regularly and openly. This is in addition to the weekly blog and photo updates of what the kids have been up to during the week at school. This has enabled us to see the progress of Elias’s learning journey and wellbeing; he loves his school and is happy and excited to go to school every morning. The teachers and support staff have gone above and beyond in caring about the students’ wellbeing. The ELV has an incredibly amazing student support team that has really helped address our child’s developmental and social emotional needs. The school is truly international; Elias’s classmates are from all over the world. They learn about each other’s cultures and observe different holidays in the classroom. This is great exposure to cultural differences and knowledge from a young age. Stamford has exceeded our expectations.

Janine and Jonathan Pentzien, Americans; Calla (14) and Carson (9) American International School

Both our children are currently enrolled at SAIS – Calla in Grade 9, and Carson in Grade 4; they’ve been at the school since we arrived in Singapore in 2016. We’ve had a great experience at SAIS overall. The kids have been involved in various CCAs, sports, music lessons (piano, guitar, choir) and clubs since they arrived. Carson has been in the bilingual Mandarin programme since Pre-K, and we have enjoyed the close-knit nature of that group, in addition to him having half his day taught in Mandarin. Calla plays on the SAIS U19 Girls basketball team, an activity she really enjoys. We have also been involved in the school as parents, including on the PTA board, helping to organise social events, and providing some teaching assistance in the music department. We really enjoy being a part of the community at Stamford and feel happy our kids are at this school. When we first came to Singapore, it was supposed to be only for two years; we researched and toured several schools and chose SAIS because we were

excited about the academic options and impressed with the facilities, and we also loved the central location. Once we decided to stay longer, we briefly considered looking at other schools but the kids have continued to thrive at Stamford, so there was no reason to move them. We like the IB curriculum and the amount of analysis and reflection involved in all aspects of learning at the school. We would definitely recommend Stamford to other families, especially if they’re interested in the IB curriculum. There are many wonderful programmes and activities on offer, as well as a warm and connected school community, and a great location. If you’re looking for a school offering a variety of academic tracts (IB, DP, BTEC) that also has many sports, drama and music options, all in a great location in Singapore, then we feel Stamford is a fantastic choice.
