In The Classroom

Jose Yuriel Dimayacyac, Grade 11, Filipino

I’m currently a junior at SAS after having been here for 11 years. Throughout my time growing up in this community, I’ve seen my interests grow with the grand extracurricular scene we have here. One activity that iswell-receivedby our community is the preparation for the annual drama production, which this year was the musical The 25th Annual PutnamCounty Spelling Bee. In joining this production, I was stepping out of my comfort zone since acting was completely new to me. However, as cast mates became family and with all the support I received from them, I developed a newfound passion for acting. Being a part of this production was definitely one of my major high school highlights as it showed me just how welcoming our community is. Reflecting on this experience, I realise how grateful I am for the vast number of opportunities I have at this school. No matter what I may find the passion for, SAS always has something to offer.

On top of my exposure to extracurricular activities, the inner communities such as honour societies allow me to delve deeper into subjects of interest. As a result, I found a love for Physics, a subject I hope to pursue after I graduate. For all these, I appreciate SAS for supporting passion in every direction.

WHAT’S NEW Talkwith anExpert The team at Psych Connect has seen a continuous increase in individuals seeking services for mental health issues (anxiety, depression, grief) and presenting with physiological symptoms – it goes to show how physical and emotional health are intimately intertwined. Led by Dr Sanveen Kang, the specialist psychology clinic is the first in Singapore to incorporate the sensory motor system into psychotherapy; as such, it’s recognised as having psychologists who are preferred by many leading medical practitioners. The staff are also equipped to support clients with conditions made worse by pre-existing mood problems such as dermatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic congestion syndrome and tics. psychconnect.sg

will need for future success. Breaking Ground The learning journey of each Singapore American School “Eagle” is unique. That’s what the school’s teachers mirror every day in the classroom, as they aim to create engaging

learning experiences that are both high quality and tailored to the individual needs of each student. The school says this approach empowers the faculty to meet students where they are and help them move forward. Speaking of moving forward, six of their elementary schoolers donned hard hats and safety hats on 6 September last year to hurl clumps of dirt into the air with the help of shovels. This marked the groundbreaking of the new elementary school – and a first look at what’s coming up for SAS! sas.edu.sg

Claire joined the preschool at SAS in August 2020. Since we moved here during the pandemic and only days before the school year began, we weren’t able to visit schools and had to rely on online research. We were drawn to the Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum and felt a connection with seeing children as unique and capable learners. We were also encouraged by the professional support teachers receive and the low teacher turnover rates. If teachers are happy, it’s a good sign. We initially looked into preschools closer to home but decided that having both children on the same academic schedule would be best. We’ve been very happy with our decision so far – and extremely impressed with the preschool. Our daughter is happy to go to school every day and her curiosity and love of learning is encouraged. During weekends and school breaks she asks, “Do I have school tomorrow? When can I go back?” She’s learning so much about the world around her, while having the time of her life riding bikes, building fairy castles, exploring, painting and enjoying her daily Move and Groove class. There are Chinese classes every day and we’ve been amazed at how quickly she’s picking up the language through songs and games. There are many preschools in Singapore so it can be overwhelming. We’d encourage families to tour SAS and see for themselves whether the school is right for them. Distance from home seemed like a huge deal but turned out to be a non-issue for us and definitely not a reason to miss the opportunity to attend an amazing school like SAS. It’s a very special and magical place.

Jeanette and Todd Andersen, American; Holland (8), Andi (6), Jackson (4) and Beckham (2).

This July, we’ll have been in Singapore for four years. This is the first year at Singapore American School for Holland, Andi and Jackson; we transferred from another international school that they attended for three years as SAS can accommodate all our children on one campus. We a l s o mov ed wi t h i n wa l k i ng distance to the school and many of the teachers and administration live in our neighbourhood. Knowing that these wonderful people work with and enjoy being neighbours with our children is so refreshing. We’ve gotten to knowmany different people who work in different positions and all of them have exceeded every expectation. We can only assume that much of their positivity comes from feeling valued at their place of work, and we reap the benefits as we see how they truly care about our children as individuals and will go to great lengths to ensure they are seen and cared for in a way that is tailored to their needs. The teachers really love their jobs and care so much about the children they educate. They feel supported and encouraged to progress their methods and resources through regular training throughout the year. We have felt an overwhelming sense of community, which is important to us while we are so far away from home. The after-school activities are incredible! Many of the programmes are at the school and eliminate the hassle of travelling. We especially love the option of Saturday morning baseball and dance classes, since we stay so close to school. While the school will happily give you a tour, we highly recommend asking any SAS parent about their personal experience. For years, we had heard how wonderful the school was and how teachers would stay for over 15 years at a time. We couldn’t fully understand what that would mean for our children until we experienced it ourselves.
