JANUARY 2022 ANNUAL KIDS’ GUIDE
Bright Young Things
Nikki, British, and Ali, Iranian; Faya (6), Noah (4) and Elias (2) We moved to Singapore from Hong Kong in 2017. Faya had just turned two years and Noah was a baby.
As a former teacher, I was looking for a few key things in a preschool. I felt that a large campus environment might overwhelm Faya so we wanted a warm, cosy and safe environment. Secondly, and non-negotiable, was a play-led learning environment. My experience is that play-led learning for young children is vital for their early-stage development; they have all their lives for serious learning! Finally, it had to be within walking distance of our home. Shaws ticked all these boxes and more. The teachers won us over with their warm personalities and they seemed to genuinely care about the children in their care. This definitely proved to be the case. Faya joined Shaws in 2018, followed by Noah the following year and eventually Elias, the final member of our family, in 2021. Faya recently started primary school, Noah is in N2 and Elias is in pre-nursery. They all love Shaws and have made so many friends from countries far and wide. My favourite memory is definitely the pre pandemic Mother’s Day celebrations that my mother-in-law and I attended. The children sang songs and we had a salsa class together; there was so much fun and laughter.
WHAT FAYA LOVES “Definitely cookery class!”

PRESCHOOL GUIDE
Preschool
Marlies and Bryce Boland, Swiss and Kiwi; Mia (6), Amy (4), Kim (2) and Zoe (7 months)
We’ve been living in Singapore for eight years. Amy and Kim each joined Shaws on Boscombe Road when they were 18 months. Mia did too but she departed last August to go to “big school”. They all started with three half-days and loved it so much that they wanted to go every day, so we moved them to five half-days. The experience with the school has been positive at every stage. The teachers are kind and caring, and know every kid in the school and their parents and helpers. The environment is fun and play-based. The girls especially love the fun games at circle time and mud kitchen in their first years. They learn to sing and dance with Chinese songs and all three will sing songs together during the festival times. The Shaws Little League sports programme is also excellent – they all love the skill development and fun. Both Amy and Kim love going to school and seeing their friends, and sharing what they’ve made when they come home. Prior to COVID restrictions, the kids loved the regular water play. They would also go on excursions to interesting places – these were great fun for the little ones and adults alike.
The result for Mia has been extremely positive – she is excelling at big school, conversant with her Chinese teachers and helps other kids with their learning. Her old teachers love to see her when she stops by occasionally on the school run, especially Miss Carmi. We initially found Shaws while looking for something play-based on the East Coast near where we lived. It was one of the few schools where there was flexibility on the number of days and length of programme, and we wanted that flexibility to see how the girls adapted to the school. We liked the outdoor play area, which we think is very important for little kids. We also liked the location, being on a quiet side street without a lot of road noise. We would recommend this school to other families who are looking for a play-based programme, a fun and happy environment where the kids don’t want to leave, and with Chinese-native speakers to give the kids a fun approach to learning Mandarin.

Maxim and Jace Kemel, American and Singaporean; Vincent (5) and Julian (2)
It’s been a year since we moved from the UK back to Singapore. We chose Shaws because we were attracted by the balanced curriculum, focus
on learning through play, and overall diversity of the school. The large outdoor play area and curated sports activities were other differentiating factors that drew us in. Vincent’s favourite part of the school is the Shaws Little League sports activities while Julian’s is the spacious outdoor playground. What has impressed us recently is that Vincent, who is generally very sports focused, has really expressed enthusiasm towards his Chinese calligraphy lessons, which demonstrates the quality and balance of the teaching at Shaws. Our children have made loads of friends and have never had a bad day at the school. We look forward to their ongoing journey at Shaws Preschool! THE SCHOOL SAYS… Every day is an exciting learning adventure at Shaws. Led by our dedicated and experienced teachers, your child’s innate curiosity and creativity will blossom through hands on learning, exploration, outdoor play and sports. We provide a rich, stimulating, colourful and vibrant learning environment that builds the foundation for an adventurous and successful life!
What’s new? Our ShawsPlay Club is a holistic learning syllabus designed to equip children with vital 21st-century life skills. They will cook like little chefs, create works of art, pick up specialised sports, participate in speech and drama, learn to swim (at the Lorong Chuan Campus), develop programming skills using Codeplay, and more!

LIFE & FAMILY
BY PATRICEA CHOW
Playing outside helps children develop useful motor skills and stay active while learning at the same time. Two preschools in Singapore share how they incorporate the outdoors into learning – and we hear what the parents think too.
Shaws Preschool Since opening its doors in 1989, outdoor play has been an intrinsic part of the Shaws Preschool curriculum. Being outdoors encourages children to explore, learn and understand the world around them through words, smell, touch and hearing the sounds of nature. All five of their schools have large outdoor spaces that include butterfly gardens and veggie patches, climbing and sports equipment, bicycle tracks, water play and messy play areas. Shaws Teachers do more than just take lessons outdoors – they integrate the outdoors into learning. You might find the children outside under a shady spot for art classes, taking a Chinese reading lesson, measuring for a Maths lesson, or doing experiments for Science. The children get to use their fine and gross motor skills while soaking up some vitamin D, exercising and getting lots of fresh air, all while they learn. Children at the Serangoon campuses even enjoy Water Confidence Classes in the private pool at the Lorong Chuan campus, all as part of the Shaws Play curriculum. Twice a week, the kids have Shaws Little League classes introducing them to soccer, basketball, rugby, cricket, volleyball, hockey, athletics and more. What better way to learn resilience, grit, communication, teamwork and develop self-esteem? Toddlers also have Messy Play and Water Play in the morning or afternoon, a great way to make a mess while learning through play and having fun outdoors! A word from parents… A major highlight for us has been the sports and outdoors focus at Shaws. The kids get plenty of time to play outside and Shaws does Little League all year round. We really value this as it gets the kids moving and interested in a huge range of sports. Kathryn & Matthew Bousfield, Shaws Preschool Katong
Little Bunnies Little Bunnies – The Outdoor Classroom is a preschool with a difference; you sense this from the moment you walk into the open, breathable classroom made from recycled finds from around Singapore. The school doesn’t use air-conditioning, instead taking advantage of the high ceilings for natural ventilation with a totally open breathable wall. The tropical oasis garden has shady grass areas for outdoor play where chickens roam freely amongst the plants and vegetables. The garden has bamboo-woven playhouses for imaginary play along with a small pond with fish and tadpoles. Children play outside for an hour each morning. Activities vary from nature treasure hunts and watercolour painting to fun with ride-on cars and trucks, digging in the garden and watering the plants. Projects inside the classroom often extend outside with dinosaurs and fossil hunting and even outdoor picnics. Little Bunnies is a “green thinking green doing” preschool with a very low carbon footprint. The teaching team strives to help children understand that we all need to play our part to help our planet to thrive, and that being connected to and having empathy for nature and living things is essential for wellbeing. A word from parents… Sid and Doug had such amazing experiences at Little Bunnies. We appreciate all of the effort that the preschool put in to ensure they were always happy and thriving. We really couldn’t wish for a better start to their ‘school’ life. Jo & Andy 21 Media Circle, #01-08 9759 8990 | little-bunnies.com
