“WHAT A FRIZZ-ASTER!”
I may not know you personally, dear reader, but I can make a confident guess that, living in Singapore, frazzled locks are one of your mane beauty problems (yes, I went there!). Indeed, for many of us, it’s not long after we’ve stepped out of the blissful air- conditioned cocoon of our apartments – even without getting caught in the rain – that our hair starts seriously misbehaving, and to keep it looking freshly coiffed all day is a serious feat. To add insult to injury, having big natural curls seems to give my mane an extra excuse to sprout rogue strands in all directions. That’s genetics for you. (Cheers, Mum.) Over the years, the local salon industry has cottoned on to our shared hair woes and now, thanks to tech advances, there are all sorts of treatments to smoothen and de-kink stressed or lacklustre locks. We’ve shared all these discoveries in our biggest hair guide yet (from page 29), including tried and tested products and DIY tips from top beauty experts like our cover star, Ellie Sakrzewski, co-founder of The Big Blow salon (page 24). Get stuck in! For your shopping fix this month, we went on the hunt for wardrobe additions that can take you from work to play, special events and more (page 45). Sometimes we underestimate them, but investing in good accessories – be it a killer pair of shoes, a structured handbag or a funky statement necklace – can really pull your look together. Finally, this month, we’re celebrating one year of LIV and 12 fabulous issues, full of real style, beauty recommendations and inspirational women. And as a big thank you for reading us and supporting our journey, we’ve partnered with The Fullerton Hotel to give away indulgent champagne brunches to a lucky few. Flick to page 5 to enter, and good luck!
See you next month,

Products, treatments and trends to try now
Most of us have one or more pesky problem areas: thighs, hips, bums or tums, and sometimes it doesn’t matter how religiously you sweat it out at boot camps on a Saturday morning or gobble up your greens, there’s that stubborn fat that just won’t disappear. So what are your options? Calling on science for help doesn’t have to mean invasive surgery. TruSculpt from Cutera boasts the latest fat-blasting technology, using pulses of radiofrequency energy to tighten and tone the skin. Aside from the fact there is no pain (just a warm, tingly feeling), it can be used on virtually any area of concern – even back fat, double chins and cellulite! What’s more, results are seen in as little as four to six weeks, ideal if you’re preparing for a holiday, a wedding or another special occasion. SPEEDY RESULTS THE LIFESTYLE CLINIC To enquire or book an appointment, contact Dr Komathy Rajaratnam at 6733 0788, 1 Orchard Boulevard, #13-03 Camden Medical Centre. lifestyleclinic.sg

Time to Glow Air-con, pollution and the sun’s rays – all of these daily aggressors threaten to age your complexion. But there is hope in the form of a good, protective serum, and we like the hard-working Daily Reviving Concentrate from Kiehl’s ($80). It uses 100 percent naturally derived ginger root essential oil, which is absorbed fast to keep your skin in optimal
condition without looking or feeling greasy. If you’re already a Kiehl’s fan, you can use it in tandem with their Midnight Recovery Concentrate for rejuvenating skin, 24/7. Available now in Singapore’s 13 Kiehl’s stores.

Mad Dogs Englishmen and
By Rebecca Bisset
According to Noel Coward, “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” According to DR YVONNE GOH, however, there are a lot of joggers and tennis players in Singapore who go out in it too!
T he sun here can be a bit deceptive, because it doesn’t seem to burn like the Australian or New Zealand sun does, or even the British sun (when it does shine…) – but it still has all the same harmful and ageing effects. From a purely aesthetic point of view, this means you need a lot more maintenance. Whatever our age, the sun causes damage to our skin – we’re talking sun spots and other uneven pigmentation on the face, neck and hands. Noses and décolletages seem to bear the brunt of the sun’s rays, and in addition to the pigmentation issues already mentioned tend to lead to increased wrinkling of the chest, enlarged pores on the nose, and broken veins and blotchiness in both areas. All sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Golfers and tennis players seem to get quite pronounced pigmentation on the sides of the neck, notes Dr Goh, even though they may have protected their face by wearing a cap. Here are Dr Yvonne Goh’s recommendations for preventing the burn and treating the aftermath:
1. P revention is key. If you have to go out into the sun at midday (or at any time), you need to apply sunblock at least every three hours, making sure to cover all areas including the ears, the hands and the sides of the neck. 2. Although not a solution to more serious skin issues like melanoma, laser toning can improve texture and pigmentation, and it takes only a few minutes each time. It also helps close broken veins. Note: I have just had a treatment, and all I felt was a prickly sensation. It really doesn’t hurt (and I am a bit of a wimp). For cases like mine, you need about five sessions, done two weeks apart, to make a real difference. The cost is similar to a regular facial at a good salon. 3. An intense pulsed light or IPL treatment can be a bit more painful, but has a greater effect on the superficial levels of the skin. It works well for freckles, and for other more distinct pigmentation marks. 4. A fruit milk peel – containing a mixture of fruit acid and milk acid – is another good way to combat sun damage, and has no down-time at all. It’s also very good for clearing up “spotty skin”. 5. F or a neck and décolletage that are becoming scraggy from age and exposure to the sun, the ultrasound-based Ultherapy treatment goes a bit deeper to lift and firm the skin. Consider having it done every year to stay ahead of gravity. Ultherapy can also help lift saggy eyelids – plus a variety of other sagging parts of the anatomy, too!
What’s the bottom line? If you can’t stay out of the sun, or you’ve already done the damage, at least you can do something about it!

We ask a LIV reader what makes her work wardrobe tick... Lindsay Narain, founder of Vaughan, wearvaughan.com I have a newborn and a two-year-old at home, so my routine is pretty tight. In the morning, I shower and clear some email before my toddler is up. By 9am, I’m at my desk. It’s a perfect time for reviewing samples for an upcoming collection or meeting with photographers or stylists. At noon, I pick up my son from school and have lunch – something simple and healthy at home. In the afternoon, I deal with any admin or customer service issues that come my way. I usually try to finish by 4pm to give my full attention to my kids. For dinner, I love to have something simple on the grill with a decadent glass of red wine. After dinner, it’s time for a square of dark chocolate, HBO and bed. Her daily routine… Although I work from home, I make a point of getting dressed each day. After all, I work in fashion, so spending the day in yoga gear is bad for morale! For the day, I usually wear a Vaughan shirt with sleeves rolled up, a pair of J Crew joggers or distressed denim, and embellished flats. In the evening, I’ll keep the shirt on but wear it with wide trousers or a patterned skirt and sky-high heels. Her dress code… In general, I like classic clothing, so it’s rare that I’ll buy any truly trendy pieces. I gravitate to well-made garments in luxe fabrics and flattering colours. I’m drawn to classic cuts in great patterns or shades. I don’t often wear dresses, probably because I prefer the versatility of separates. Even for formal occasions, I would prefer to wear an extravagant skirt with a silk blouse. I’m a big believer in uniforms! Once you know what works for your body and lifestyle, they make getting dressed so easy. For me, shirts are the best because they’re so easy to dress up or down while still looking effortless. I try to keep an edited closet, so I hold out to buy pieces I really love. Since I’m buying quality, I usually plan to wear everything for a few seasons; anything less feels wasteful. Vaughan’s versatile silk shirts (of course!) are a must. Helmut Lang, Vince and Acne’s upgraded basics provide the basis of my wardrobe. Marlies Dekkers and Stella McCartney intimates and sleepwear because they’re practical but still pretty, and Valentino, Fendi and Prada for bags that walk the line between practical and cool. When it comes to shoes, I have zero loyalty! Her fashion sense… Her wardrobe staples… Her personal style…

Blowing Us
Away
An exciting career in beauty has taken her all around the globe – from London to Tokyo and Sydney before landing on Singapore’s shores – and ELLIE SAKRZEWSKI now channels her passion for hair and makeup into her booming salon business, The Big Blow . We chat to the glam mum of one about what inspired her to start the business, her tips for getting gorgeous tresses and her favourite ways to unwind. I’m a makeup artist who is also trained in hair. While I was in Paris, a chance meeting led to an amazing career in London. As well as working on shoots, fashion shows, TV commercials and music videos for the likes of David Bowie and the Sugababes, I was also involved with the launch and PR of Aveda Cosmetics and Shu Uemura in the UK. I’ve been lucky throughout my life to have worked with some of the most amazing and inspiring people, who still have an impact on my professional life. I think that seeing the industry from different angles gave me so many different ideas along the way. For years, I had a concept in my head of a place where women could go to get ready for going out, or to drop in for a fast fix. Great hair and makeup that suits you can improve your attitude and confidence immediately, and I wanted to bring that experience to women in Singapore! Why a mobile service in addition to a bricks-and- mortar salon? Tell us about your background and the inspiration behind The Big Blow.
My girlfriends have always ended up in my bedroom to get ready. It was (and still is!) so much fun. I think of getting ready for an event as an extension of the occasion itself. For my 30th, one of my close friends who was a session hair-stylist came to my

house and did my hair, and I loved it as all I had to do was get dressed. I think that the world has changed so much with new technology and cool concept workplaces – going to a salon on a Saturday morning or your day off is not the standard any more; it needs to be part of our lifestyle. Women today need to have the choice of where and when they want to get their hair done, especially as we are busier than ever juggling multiple responsibilities such as work, family and home. Every time I land in a new city, I want to get a great blowout. Recently, when I was in Dubai, I wanted a stylist to come to my hotel as I had limited time to get ready for an event. I was so disappointed the hotel could only offer a salon in the shopping mall next door. That’s when you need a mobile service. Tell us your top tips for maintaining our hairstyles in this humidity. Get a twice-weekly blowout! You can never do it better than your stylist can. If you’re styling your own hair, it’s essential to remove all of the moisture, therefore you need anti- humectant products – ones that repel moisture. When using heat-styling tools like straighteners and irons, prep your hair with heat protection products and make sure your hair has completely cooled before going outside, otherwise the cuticles will open, making your hair more porous and leading to dreaded frizz.
26
Product technology is amazing now, and there’s a lot of choice around. Use smoothing lotion and an anti- humidity spray. I absolutely love Moroccan Oil’s new range of smoothing products. As someone with curly hair who loves it smooth, I haven’t found any products that work quite like these. You also have to be realistic with your hair. If you’ve got curly locks and you’re going to an outdoor party on a boat on a damp day, that’s obviously a recipe for disaster! The right style for your hair type can make all the difference. What are your favourite ways to unwind in Singapore? Horse-riding is my favourite pastime. I’m learning to play polo, and honestly it’s the best thing I’ve ever done – it may take me forever to learn to play well, but it’s fabulous fun! My 12-year-old son and I ride bikes and horses together; we both love the outdoors. I enjoy keeping fit and healthy, so I’m a regular runner, too. Your work has taken you all over the world.
Who are your style icons, and why? When I was a girl I was obsessed with Farrah Fawcett and her amazing hair! Other than that, I never really had style icons as such, but rather an era or an image from a certain time. I love looking super-glam: think Studio 54, bronzed skin, shiny makeup and big hair! My mum had false eyelashes that sat in her top drawer with her makeup. I would always take them out and look at them. Even though she was a stay-at-home mum when we were young, I didn’t know why she wouldn’t want to wear them every day! What else do you have in the pipeline for The Big Blow? We’re constantly developing new treatments and styling solutions for women in Singapore, and in the next 12 months we’re very excited to have more fabulous new products coming on board, as well as a few fun concepts up our sleeves. A couple of months ago, we debuted our first ever “Glamour Lounge” and it was a huge success, so we’re planning more interesting add-on experiences too. Whatever we do, we’ll make it amazing!
Tell us some of your favourite destinations, and one new place on your wish list. Ever ywhere I’ve worked is a favourite in some way to me, because I was there during a certain point in my life when it suited both my needs and my career. Tokyo was a really inspiring place. I lived there for a number of years and I go back when I can. The fashion and beauty industry is enormous, even on a domestic level. It’s so sophisticated, yet completely out of this world. Most trends in fashion and pop culture seem to start up from street fashion in Tokyo. As for the wish list, South America

w o u l d b e interesting to go to – makeup and grooming is such a huge part of everyday life there; it would be fun to indulge
in that for some time. For holiday destinations, I’ve been thinking about places where you can play polo. I love the Alps, and I have Portugal and Canada on my hit list!

Swiss Resolution It’s easy to spend too much time fussing over our complexions, while neglecting the rest of our bodies. Thankfully, Haute Swiss Cosmetics carries an impressive range of superhero body products just waiting to be discovered. Singapore’s first retail chain dedicated to Swiss beauty, Haute Swiss Cosmetics has become a go-to for women of all ages for its coveted brands – Karin Herzog, Swisscode and Calinesse, among others – all of which are grounded by scientifically backed formulations to improve the look of your skin. But the boutique also carries ranges for the body. Whether you’re looking to treat cellulite, reduce water retention or to find a solution to flaky skin, there’s something to suit your needs. Here are a few favourites.
NESCENS Acid pH Hyper- Desquamation Regulating Compound, $245 This targeted cream helps to prevent and correct age-related damage to your hands –one of the first places that can give away our age – by smoothing skin dryness and roughness, and fading fine lines and dark spots. Simply apply every morning and evening after washing your hands.
Karin Herzog Silhouette, $82
The high level of oxygen in this clever product breaks up deposits of fat and nasty toxins, increases circulation and improves your skin’s renewal rate. Simply apply a thin layer to problem areas once or twice a day and allow to absorb for five to 10 minutes. The formula stimulates your lymphatic system, increases blood flow and promotes a healthy glow. Combine this product with a good diet and exercise routine, and you should see results within just two weeks. Also try… Tonus B12, $82 – The perfect accompaniment to Silhouette , this firming body tonic helps to stop cellulite from reforming.
A l s o t r y… Ne s c e n s Lipid-Replenishing and Repairing Preparation, $193 – For extremely dry, flaky skin that’s prone to peeling, this cream helps to minimise skin roughness: just apply twice a day to cleansed skin.

The LIV team and our salon experts spill the beans on their favourite products, plus tips for healthy, happy hair.
The Team Says… Natalie Whittell, Regional Brand Partnerships and Events Manager
I can’t live without Moroccan Oil; I use it every day to keep my hair in check, and soak my hair in it overnight when all those pesky colouring sessions dry out the ends. Amy Brook-Partridge, Home & Property Editor Garnier Ultimate Blends sleek restorer products were part of my usual Boots raid during my recent holiday in the UK. They were as cheap as chips, I don’t think I spent more than 10 quid for the three – that’s $20! The coconut oil “serum” is a particular favourite; I use it on wet, damp or dry hair to keep my barnet in line. humidity and frizz. A godsend in Singapore, I use this before blow-drying and it helps tame my “big” hair into some semblance of calm, even keeping my unruly mane at bay for a while in the humidity. (I’m not promising miracles – this is still Singapore after all!) Veena Gill, Marketing & Business Development I’ve just started using The Body Shop’s Wild Argan Oil and it has worked wonders on my dry ends. It has a rich, moisturising texture and keeps my wild hair frizz-free all day. Verne Maree, Executive Editor Though I’m less keen on Australian natural brand Sukin’s low-foaming shampoos, I do like the Sukin Nourishing Conditioner. It’s paraben-free, a little goes a long way and it comes in such a big bottle that I can generously share it with my husband to keep his beard lovely and soft. Katie Roberts, Life & Family Editor Among UK brand Percy & Reed’s range is the Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Balm that has served me well since I stumbled across it three years ago. Daily blow-drying and styling is not a part of my routine – it’s more a wash-and-go approach; and a touch of this leave-in balm smoothes fly-aways, moisturises and adds a healthy sheen in one quick hit. Dominic Seow, Director of Visage Salon Take care of your blonde highlights – the water here is different to that in European countries and can strip shine or colour from hair. Try using a home water-filter for your shower. To protect your hair before swimming and avoid highlights turning green, apply conditioner before getting into the pool, and always make sure you rinse it thoroughly straight afterwards. The Experts Say… Johnson, Technician and Colourist at Toni & Guy Rochester Mall Minimise hair breakage by doing a nourishing protein treatment (such as Kerastase Ciment Anti-Usure or Olaplex) before and after any chemical service, and remember to be gentle with your hair when brushing – it makes a Ellie Sakrzewski, Co-founder of The Big Blow Salon Beat frizz at home with the smoothing range from Moroccan Oil. Using the products on a regular basis, you’ll notice your hair feels more moisturised and manageable over time. GETTING TO GRIPS A great-looking mane helps us feel confident and ready to take on the world. That’s why the first signs of losing your hair can cause distress, anxiety and embarrassment. While losing 30 to 50 strands of hair a day is considered normal, more women are finding themselves losing more than that, and suffering from increasingly fine hair or even patches of baldness. EAT YOUR WAY TO HEALTHY LOCKS WITH HAIR FALL
Include more of these super- foods in your diet to give your hair the best foundations for growth.
Typically, female hair loss happens in the area of the parting, but it can happen anywhere on the scalp. Genetics and age can play a part in the process, but so can stress, diet, medication and changes in hormone levels as we age. There are plenty of products and therapies on the market that claim to add volume or prevent hair fall, but no one’s making any guarantees, and

Wigs and hair extensions will lend more volume instantly, but they’re hardly practical to wear on a daily basis, not to mention uncomfortable in this heat! Alternatively, there are new methods that actually integrate real, healthy hair with your own hair, using advanced technology. Hairdreams, a specialised salon chain from Europe, is one of the few salons in Singapore to offer such a service, which can turn your head of hair from thinning and brittle to full and healthy in less than two hours. Greek Yoghurt Vitamin B5 in this protein- packed snack helps blood flow around the body (and therefore, to your scalp); in the long term, it can also help against hair thinning. You can go about your daily routine as normal – swimming, spin class, heat styling, you name it – with your hair remaining intact.

Re tored
Severe hair loss can be stressful, but there are promising solutions. Here, Dr Phoon Yi Shan introduces us to ARTAS, one of the most sophisticated hair-transplant systems on the market. Tell us about the ARTAS process. What’s involved? ARTAS is an advanced, physician-controlled, computer-assisted robotic system for transplanting hair permanently from the back or sides of the scalp to areas that have sparse or no hair. Since it was developed in 2011 in Palo Alto, California, it has been FDA-approved and awarded a gold medal at the 26th Edison Awards ceremony in Chicago. The first step of the surgery is to harvest donor hair follicles from areas of the scalp with sufficient hair. This makes use of an image-guided robotic arm and digital imaging. Under the precise control of the doctor, each follicle unit is identified and accurately harvested. Hair position, angle, and other parameters are continuously re-calibrated to achieve optimum harvest results, while making sure the donor areas retain their natural appearance. For the second step, the harvested follicles are transplanted to thinning areas based on the experience and artistry of the doctor to achieve an excellent result. What does the surgery feel like? Will there be any discomfort? Both the harvesting and transplanting procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. After the initial injection (which feels something like a small ant-bite), the entire scalp becomes numb, and my patients feel virtually no pain throughout the surgery. In fact, some actually fall asleep during the procedure, without any drugs from me! What’s the recovery time, and how long does it take to see the best results? Recovery is swift. Patients can return to their usual activities after a day or two and, after a week, the treated area will look and feel normal. The newly implanted hair gradually develops its own blood supply and starts a new growth cycle. New hair will start to be seen after three months, and will continue to grow over the next year.
You can now get the hair you want, while keeping the look of the hair you have
Is there any aftercare needed? Aftercare is simple. After surgery, patients will have a dressing for one day; following that, it can be removed and you can wash your hair with clean water. After a week, you can start using shampoo too. What sets ARTAS apart from other methods? ARTAS brings a new level of precision and accuracy to hair transplantation surgery, which means success rates have significantly improved. There’s also better patient comfort and faster
recovery because the surgery is minimally invasive and leaves no scarring. You can continue your normal daily routine in one to two days, and wear your hair in any style. To design a new hairline requires a lot of creative judgment and artistic skill. Facial shape, direction of hair growth, hair type and other factors all have to be considered. The consultation should be a mutual sharing of the doctor’s clinical judgement and experience and the patient’s needs and expectations. The important thing is that with ARTAS you can now get the hair you want, while keeping the look of the hair you have!

REMEDIES Are your tresses in need of some serious therapy? Try one of our recommended treatments at salons around town for smoother, healthier locks.
This special treatment uses a formulation of combined plant and fruit extracts to treat oily scalps and hair loss. It cleanses hair of excess sebum, and unclogs the hair follicles – crucial to promoting hair growth. The treatment starts with a light, relaxing hair wash, followed by an ozone treatment on the scalp and the application of a special formula and tonic. Next, a high-tech electrode is run over the scalp to stimulate and rejuvenate the hair follicles. The salon’s experienced creative team – helmed by the industry-renowned Gina Lau – are well known for their cut and colouring skills. They’ve been styling models for fashion shows and magazine covers, as well as the likes of you and I, since 1986! #05-06 Paragon Call 6732 3773 for an appointment What to request: Customised Scalp Treatment
Visage uses Redken’s Cerafill range, a salon-grade solution formulated to rescue thinning hair, or tresses prone to breakage. The two Cerafill varieties – Defy and Retaliate – strengthen, stimulate and nourish your hair, improve its appearance and get it looking and feeling fuller with more body. Both of these invigorating formulas (we love the light ginger and menthol fragrances) also cleanse the scalp, removing any sebum or bacteria clogging the hair follicles and inhibiting growth. #02-11/14 Delfi Orchard Call 6733 0933 for an appointment visage.com.sg What to request: Tr e a tment wi th Re dken Cerafill products

What to request: Signature S3 Super Smooth & Sleek Blow Out Treatment
Consider this cool treatment a quick fix to de-frizz and smoothe your hair. Touted as the salon’s “Super Blow Out”, it will give you sleeker, more manageable hair for a few days, while making your tresses more controllable over time. The popular S3 works a treat when repeated on a regular basis (once a month is ideal) and costs $125 for one session, $330 for three and $600 for six. Available seven days a week at the Cluny Court salon, the S3 takes less than an hour. The salon has also recently launched the S3X, a stronger, more traditional keratin-like treatment designed to make hair silkier, shinier and more controllable for up to two months. While not a re-bonding treatment, the S3X has a straightening effect on wavy hair. The price is $275 for a single treatment, or $500 for two. Both treatments use babassu oil and hydrolysed keratin complex, and are formaldehyde-free, safe during pregnancy and suitable for most hair types. #02-21 Cluny Court 501 Bukit Timah Road Call 6465 4836 for an appointment thebigblow.com
What to request: Olaplex treatment The team at Expat Hair Studio are keen to dispel any myths about Olaplex. “This is not a conditioning treatment! It doesn’t contain any silicon, protein or sulphates,” says Kat Moss, salon co-founder. “It’s actually a bond multiplier that repairs and reconnects broken disulphide bonds in your hair, which are originally broken down through chemical, thermal and mechanical damage.” Olaplex will work well for you if your colour fades quickly, and if you want to prevent damage from further colouring and achieve hair with a luminous, glossy shine. You can request it as either an add-on or standalone service at the studio. 422 Joo Chiat Road Call 6444 7929 for an appointment facebook.com/expathairstudio
