Secrets of IBSuccess Overseas Family School enjoyed a phenomenal per formance i n the 2021 I nternat i ona l Baccalaureate; here, three of its perfect scorers share tips for the next cohort! BY PATRICEA CHOW
Snapshot of OFS Results • Five students achieved a perfect 45 points • 33 percent of over 150 candidates scored 40 points and above • 96 percent of candidates passed • 31 percent of candidates earned prestigious IB Bilingual Diplomas, reflecting the exceptional language resources and support available Note: OFS is one of few international schools in Singapore and globally that doesn’t preselect students into the IB Diploma Programme.
Sunaina Borkar, Indian 10 years at OFS
Miho Hamada, Japanese Joined in Grade 9, four years at OFS
Noam Segal, Israeli Joined in Grade 10, three years at OFS
I wa s abso l u t e l y overjoyed at receiving a perfect score. There’s no way to describe the emotions I felt; it was an incredibly surreal experience.
Get t ing a per fect score seemed like
an impossible goal for me. When I joined OFS, I had limited English as I grew up in Israel speaking only Hebrew. Through the school’s Study
I was surprised to achieve a perfect score,
even though I told myself that the process is more important than the score. While I didn’t have any specific goals before starting IB, I wanted to stay physically and mentally healthy through it. OFS helped me achieve this through its competitive Tigers sports team – I played basketball during lunchtime and after school; it helped me to destress. I believe that joining the team and playing until the final exams pushed me to plan ahead; I procrastinated less and consequently put less stress on myself. Plan ahead so that you won’t be overwhelmed by the workload, and allow time for assessments and activities. Take all quarter tests seriously and ask your teachers how you can do better. I would sometimes go to my teachers during break times to make sure that I fully understood what they meant during class.
Consistency is key – I always strived to do my best, whether it was a unit test or a final assessment. If you start off with a solid base from the beginning of IB, revision will be a lot less stressful come exam time and you’ll definitely get the results you’ve worked for! OFS ha s an i nc l us i ve and welcoming envi ronment . Thi s allowed me to remain open-minded, and it reinforced the importance of becoming a better version of myself, rather than competing with others. And the passionate and driven teachers were always there to help, whether it was staying after class for labs or asking for feedback. I truly believe that OFS has shaped my work ethic, identity and personality into something that I’m proud of today.
Preparation Program(SPP) for rapid English acquisition, I acquired my English skills over a semester, which allowedme to quickly adjust to a mainstream class. Preparation for the IB exams is an ongoing process and it’s important to stay on track. Study for each assessment and understand the topics while they’re being taught. Make notes so that you can focus on summarising and revising in the final month. I also recommend attempting to solve past papers and revising past assessments, making sure to fully understand previous mistakes. Don’t hesitate to seek help and advice from your teachers! I’ve received tremendous support from teachers and my academic advisor. I’m so proud of myself and I feel so happy and accomplished with my diploma!

Expectations Exceeding
Recycled Seats Has your child outgrown their car seat? Recycle it! A typical toddler car seat contains more than 8kg worth of recyclable materials such as hard plastics and solid metal. That’s equivalent to 1,000 drinking water plastic
bottles! Despite being ideal for recycling, child car seats are difficult to dismantle due to their inherent design – that’s why typical recycling businesses won’t take them in. But PramWash will. The company is Singapore’s first baby gear cleaning specialist, and in 2020 it diverted more than 700kg of materials from used child seats away from the waste stream. Check pramwash.com for drop-off locations.
Five students of Overseas Family School (OFS) have achieved perfect marks in the 2021 International Baccalaureate. This is the seventh consecutive year the school has produced perfect scorers. The high 96 percent overall pass rate is notable when you consider that OFS is one of few international schools in Singapore andglobally that doesn’t preselect students into the IBDiploma Programme. Also, 31 percent of the school’s IB candidates earned prestigious IB Bilingual Diplomas – testament to the school’s language resources and support. In fact, some of the top IB scorers this year entered OFS with little to no English andwere in the school’s immersive Study Preparation Programme for rapid English language acquisition. Find out more at ofs.edu.sg or call 6738 0211 . Driving with Tesla The Tesla V3 Supercharger has arrived in Singapore! Three of the chargers have been installed in the Level 9 car park of Orchard Central – the first of their kind in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The Supercharger stations add to the 25,000 such chargers currently around the world including in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, various European countries and more. All three are available for charging 24/7, supporting the Singapore government’s vision of a cleaner and more sustainable nation driven by green transport.
SG to Vegas! Singapore’s Zouk Group marked its Las Vegas debut on the 4th of July with a weekend of festivities. The opening celebrations of Ayu Dayclub by Zouk included live performances by Miley Cyrus and DJs Tiesto and Zedd. The group and Zouk also partnered with Resorts World Las Vegas to officially launch its new integrated resort, the first on the Las Vegas Strip, with a virtual opening countdown by Katy Perry. Also featured was Famous Food Street Eats, amulti-eatery concept serving Singapore’s famed hawker fare, represented by Boon Tong Kee, Geylang Claypot Rice, Springleaf Prata Place and Ten Sun’s Braised Beef. rwslasvegas.com

THE SCHOOL SAYS… We’ve thoughtfully designed a supportive learning environment focused on the individual needs of every student. Our attention to caremeans that best-in-industry programmes are offered as part of our main curriculum at no additional cost. Our highly-successful, immersive Study Preparation Program and dedicated team of specialist educators support non-English speaking students for rapid English language acquisition. Our extensive 14-language Mother Tongue Program helps students to maintain native-level language proficiency for seamless reintegration when they return home. Students in our acclaimed IB Diploma Programme are well prepared and consistently achieve results well above local and world averages – in 2021, over 30 percent of the diplomas awarded were prestigious IB Bilingual Diplomas, reflecting the exceptional language resources and support available at OFS.
could fit into their new reality. A key element of our decision was the Study Preparation Program by Overseas Family School, which provides rapid onboarding of non-native English speakers. What set OFS apart was its incredible attention to care. Students benefit from small class sizes and a unique, full immersion experience that facilitates the acquisition of both social and academic language vocabulary. When we became aware that OFS also had the most extensive mother tongue programme offered by a Singapore international school, Carmen and Alejandra joined this programme as soon as they were fully integrated in terms of their English language skills. The best thing we can say about it is that there wasn’t any reintegration required when we returned to Spain. In their current school, our children were incorporated directly into mainstream classes, without any special support. Their teachers were extremely surprised that after five years abroad they were able to get good marks in all of their subjects without this support.

Nexus International School (Singapore)
For this year’s UN Sustainable Development Goals, learners and staff at Nexus dedicated the week of 13 to 19 September to acknowledge and highlight the goals they’d like to accomplish in a school-wide journey to building a better and more sustainable world. It started with the 100k Deeds Challenge that was led by Sai of Year 12, which was taken to the classrooms where learners presented their personal targets and solutions for their chosen Sustainable Development Goals. For one of the Sustainable Development goals of Responsible Consumption and Production, the school’s IB learners collaborated with Soles4Souls, a non-profit organisation, to run a month-long donation drive on campus to collect unwanted shoes and clothing. The collection is kept from going to waste and put to good use, including for disaster relief or supporting homeless children. IB learners at Nexus also stepped forward to propose a Cycling to School campaign in their environment systems and societies class; Years 10 to 13 are encouraged to take up cycling (in manageable distances) rather than taking car transportation to school. Through this campaign, they hope to see a reduction in the school’s carbon footprint.

Overseas Family School While most student athletes might have enjoyed a break from competitive training during their school holidays earlier this year, two inspired swimmers from OFS Tigers, Overseas Family School’s competitive swimming team, decided to put their downtime to good use. Jill Meines (Grade 8) and Naya Verma (Grade 7) participated in a fundraising initiative at the Swiss Club to benefit Tour de Cure, an organisation that raises vital funds to support talented researchers, surgeons and clinicians around the world dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. Participants were tasked with swimming 5km in two hours, an easy workout for OFS Tigers who regularly clock more time and distance during rigorous training sessions in the OFS Olympic standard pool. For Naya, cancer research is a cause especially close to her heart as she lost a grandfather to cancer many years ago. Jill and Naya’s fundraising efforts raised over $1,600 for cancer research, a small but significant contribution to Tour de Cure’s efforts to fund groundbreaking projects that will have a big impact on cancer prevention and treatment.

In The Classroom
Overseas FamilySchool
Naya Verma, Grade 7, Canadian I’ve attended OFS for 10 years . My f r iends and my supportive and dedicated teachers truly make me appreciate being in this school. OFS offers so many
o pp o r t un i t i e s a nd ameni t i es that other schools don’t have, one of which is an Olympic sized pool with state-of-the-art
equipment. I’m part of the OFS Tigers competitive swim team – getting into the pool and training daily keeps my mind fresh and focused. Our coaches consistently provide us with rigorous training and highly compet i t ive opportunities. In March this year, I qualified to participate in Singapore’s national-level televised swim competition, the Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships (SNAGs). The training from swimming helps me to build resilience to study as well. In the classroom, I really enjoy the content that we learn and how it’s personalised to be taught to us. Our teachers care about educating us in ways that we enjoy and understand, yet they challenge us to think critically at the same time. The sciences are my favourite subjects – the way that humans invent systems to understand our natural world is fascinating to me. Students have opportunities to do experiments consistently, which is my favourite part of the course. I particularly enjoy the dissections we do during our Biology units.
Due to my fascination with the systems of the brain that I learnt about in our science classes, I wish to pursue a career in neurosurgery. I also hope I will be able to keep up my passion for swimming after I graduate.

Ofer has been attending K2 at OFS for six months, ever since we arrived in Singapore, and his experience has been great. The school is known for a sense of community, support with English and meaningful mother tongue programmes. The staff were patient and informative from the very beginning. Ofer started his school year with zero English and his teachers Ms Cynthia and Mrs Wood were patient and supportive, helping out through his first months. They celebrate his successes and encourage him when things are tough, and they kept us informed of every part of his progress. We quickly discovered that language is not a barrier between kids. Ofer communicates in Hebrew with his Italian friend Alessandro, who communicates in Italian. Nevertheless, the boys understood each other. Ofer’s teachers shared this valuable moment with us, just like many other experiences in class. His classes are diverse and unique, with cooking, swimming, chess and music. Ofer also has Hebrew tongue classes for an hour a day, where he feels at home. Th e s c hoo l g i v e s a s e n s e o f accountability for the children and that makes us feel confident. This feeling is priceless for an expat family, especially so early in our journey in a new country.

Overseas Family School
Sarah and Tim Olorenshaw, Australian; Kora (9), Penny (6), Zoey (3)
We arrived in Singapore in 2020. Kora and Penny have attended Overseas Family School since we arrived and Zoey joined her big sisters in February. We relocated to Singapore during the peak of lockdowns in 2020 and there was a lot of uncertainty for us as a family. We were completely new to Singapore so it was daunting to make the right decision. A mother of Tim’s friend had been a teacher at OFS previously and she spoke highly of the school. We also read lots of positive feedback during our online research. Ultimately, given the school’s diverse nature and convenient location to where we were going to live and Tim’s workplace, we knew OFS would be the right choice. Our entire experience with the school has been very positive from the beginning. Our first tour of the school was a great start, from the warmwelcome at reception through to seeing all the excellent facilities such as the athletics track, dedicated art and music rooms, and library that the children would have access to. Our kids have felt very comfortable at the school from day one. It’s a very caring environment and provides many rich learning experiences – we always hear them talk about their days with great enthusiasm. The school has an amazing history and inclusive culture. It has a diverse environment, given the number of countries and cultures present through the children who attend. This makes for a rewarding experience for all students. We’ve found all the teachers to be excellent and highly invested in seeing our children succeed and reach their goals. No hesitation in recommending the school to other families. 81 Pasir Ris Heights 6738 0211 | ofs.edu.sg
