International Community School (Singapore)

Project Orasight is a student-led initiative founded in 2020 by four ICS High School students. Its focus is two-fold: it seeks to educate the local Singaporean community on healthy habits for proper eye care, and also help raise funds and awareness for the non-profit organisation Orbis International (OI) in support of its fight against avoidable blindness around the world. The project has 142 youth volunteers across Singapore arranged into five committees, all managed by the student founders. They organise events such as last August’s virtually held Race4Sight, where participants ran either 100km or cycled 500km over a 40-day period to raise funds for OI in anticipation of World Sight Day. From supervising all the members and hosting meetings to discuss and plan prospective events, to collaborating with third-party vendors and managing their relationship with their beneficiary, the four high schoolers have proven themselves a force to be reckoned with.

One of the founders, Jemima Siu, even received the Global Citizenship Award by EARCOS this year for being “strongly committed to engagement and action to make the world a better place”. Along with the award plaque, she was given an EARCOS Community Service Grant, which she promptly gave back to the community, by providing free eye check-ups and eye care products for the underprivileged in Singapore. 27A Jubilee Road | 6776 7435 | ics.edu.sg

human rights globally. Through AI, the school’s students understand the importance of active citizenship, giving a voice to the voiceless and creating an impact through meaningful action.

Supervised by the Head of Libraries & Grade 11 Tutor, Jonathan Guy, students meet every Friday to discuss specific cases needing urgent support and attention. The students craft letters to government officials asking for the rights of the affected individuals to be protected. Students further champion 12 publicised cases worldwide as part of Write for Rights, which is Al’s most influential human rights campaign. The students bel ieve that every individual can make a difference and affect change, and they appeal to those in positions of authority to uphold human rights. Through advocacy, information sessions and appeals, the students learn that their voices and their beliefs are the same voices and beliefs held by millions of people worldwide. The students make their actions count and strive for justice through their organised efforts, helping the world become a better place for all. 130 Depot Road 6989 3000 | nlcssingapore.sg

In The Classroom

NorthLondon Collegiate School (Singapore)

Ruben Bruhl-Gati, Grade 9, British/Hungarian/Austrian

I have attended North London Collegiate School ( S i ng apo r e ) s i nc e i t s opening in August 2020. Having lived in Singapore for 13 years and attended other international schools, it was a refreshing surprise to encounter such a welcoming and support ive educat ional environment.

The interdisciplinary nature of the school’s curriculum provides me with the opportunity to explore all aspects of my interests, while the concept of academic societies allow me to discuss these interests further with my peers. The fortnightly McCabe Lectures allow teachers to express their unique and specific areas of interest, making it a fascinating way to spend a Wednesday lunchtime. The excitement and passion held by teachers for their subjects are what sets NLCS (Singapore) apart from other schools; the academic rigour of each of my classes makes my days go by in an instant, while the support from my teachers ensures that I understand everything I am being taught. The values and ideals of the school are embodied in the excitement the teachers hold, inspiring me and my work. Amajor highlight of my time at the school was being invited to plant one of the four house trees on campus, alongside the British High Commissioner of Singapore, Her Excellency Ms Owens, and the Headmaster, Mr Friend. Being given the chance to represent my house in such an important manner was an incredible experience, an opportunity for which I am extremely grateful. Being a student at this school has opened a myriad of possibilities for my future, and I eagerly anticipate what is to come.

James and Rebecca Puddle, British; Cressida (6) and Jake (5)

We’ve been living in Singapore for 4.5 years. Jake started in Pre-KG when NLCS (Singapore) opened in August 2020 and is currently in KG1. Cressida started in KG2 and is now in Grade 1. NLCS is a well-known school in the UK for the ongoing success of its students achieving great things after they have left. There’s a strong balance between learning and nurturing an inherent feeling of wanting to learn more; who doesn’t wish that for their child? The high quality of the teachers is what stands out for us at NLCS, and the teachers at NLCS (Singapore) have been incredible. Jake’s first teacher in Pre-KG, Mrs Platt, was wonderful in starting him off on his first real school journey. His current teacher Mrs Peacock is incredible – she instils a love of learning in children from such a young age. Mrs Benson and Mr O’Suilleabhain also deserve a mention.

The campus has brilliant facilities for sports and playtime so there’s an excellent merge of academics and childhood fun. Both our children love being a part of NLCS (Singapore). They’re different characters – one more introverted, the other more extrovert. Yet the school brings out the best in both of them through play, learning and inclusivity with their classmates. There’s an open level of communication and respect for parents and teachers from the administrative staff to the heads of school. Above all, there’s respect for the children who are encouraged to be the best version of themselves. It’s amazing to see how far both the children have come and we’d highly recommend the school to parents.

NorthLondon Collegiate School (Singapore)

The facilities and line-up of CCAs is impressive. We were surprised to learn that CCAs are at no extra cost and to see even tennis as an option for seven-year-olds. Overall, everyone at the school seems highly professional and dedicated to providing a high-quality education for the children. The children enjoy school and the location is great for us. This means that our children spend less time travelling to and from school and have more time to rest and play, which is very important for us. NLCS Singapore is really a wonderful school; we couldn’t be happier and we would recommend it to anyone.

We moved to Singapore in 2018 after living in the UK for 11 years and, before that, five years in the US. Naomi and Louis have been at NLCS (Singapore) since August 2021 and we’re intending that Kai attends from 2023. Having lived in London for many years, we were aware of the excellent reputation of the parent school; our sister in-law’s three daughters were at the school and were happy. We wanted our children to join when we heard they were opening in Singapore because, having spoken to the team, we knew they were dedicated to providing the same quality of education as in London. The quality of the teachers is top class and the curriculum is excellent – we have compared notes with our friends whose children currently attend NLCS UK and we can say that it’s very much in line, which is not always the case for schools here in Singapore. This will ensure a smoother transition in the event we return to the UK.

Our first child Milada often comes home raving about the classes and projects she did in school. There never seems to be a dull moment. She’s a complete bookworm and loves to immerse herself in the school libraries. There were times when she would return home with books checked out from the senior library! We appreciate how she is always encouraged to go down different rabbit holes and really discover the joy of reading. We have immense faith in the Principal, Mr Paul Friend, and his vision for the school in the years ahead. The philosophy of nurturing, inspiring and academically challenging students to reach their fullest potential is an admirable aspect of the school and resonates with our own aspirations for our children. We’ve lived in Singapore since 2014 and both our children were born here. What drew us to NLCS is its long-standing record of academic excellence combined with a modern approach to student development. We were looking
