INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Dr Helen J Rader, American, Elementary School Counselor I ’ve been teaching
at ICS since I arrived in Singapore in 2019. I love its small, close-knit and caring community of students, parents and teachers. I feel supported and encouraged by the admini s t ra tor s to be innovative and creative in developing my teaching practices and programmes. I love teaching the weekly guidance lessons in the Elementary School classrooms. Amemorable moment for me this year was when a K5 student told one of his teachers, “Dr Rader taught me that I can still be friends with other people even if we don’t think alike or even if we like to eat different foods and do different things.” I’m always surprised and grateful when my students remember the lessons that I’ve taught them! THE SCHOOL SAYS… We are a non-profit international school offering the American curriculum in a Christian environment to students in grades K4 to Grade 12. Our high school division offers the globally recognised Advanced Placement (AP) program alongwith a US-accreditedHigh School Diploma. What’s new? We’ve launched a new user-friendly website and communications hub for our community. We’ve also brought on a new team of highly experienced teachers as we continue to chart the school’s strategic plans for the next five to seven years.

International Community School (Singapore)
Project Orasight is a student-led initiative founded in 2020 by four ICS High School students. Its focus is two-fold: it seeks to educate the local Singaporean community on healthy habits for proper eye care, and also help raise funds and awareness for the non-profit organisation Orbis International (OI) in support of its fight against avoidable blindness around the world. The project has 142 youth volunteers across Singapore arranged into five committees, all managed by the student founders. They organise events such as last August’s virtually held Race4Sight, where participants ran either 100km or cycled 500km over a 40-day period to raise funds for OI in anticipation of World Sight Day. From supervising all the members and hosting meetings to discuss and plan prospective events, to collaborating with third-party vendors and managing their relationship with their beneficiary, the four high schoolers have proven themselves a force to be reckoned with.
One of the founders, Jemima Siu, even received the Global Citizenship Award by EARCOS this year for being “strongly committed to engagement and action to make the world a better place”. Along with the award plaque, she was given an EARCOS Community Service Grant, which she promptly gave back to the community, by providing free eye check-ups and eye care products for the underprivileged in Singapore.

human rights globally. Through AI, the school’s students understand the importance of active citizenship, giving a voice to the voiceless and creating an impact through meaningful action.
Supervised by the Head of Libraries & Grade 11 Tutor, Jonathan Guy, students meet every Friday to discuss specific cases needing urgent support and attention. The students craft letters to government officials asking for the rights of the affected individuals to be protected. Students further champion 12 publicised cases worldwide as part of Write for Rights, which is Al’s most influential human rights campaign. The students bel ieve that every individual can make a difference and affect change, and they appeal to those in positions of authority to uphold human rights. Through advocacy, information sessions and appeals, the students learn that their voices and their beliefs are the same voices and beliefs held by millions of people worldwide. The students make their actions count and strive for justice through their organised efforts, helping the world become a better place for all.
Six Senior School students of NLCS (Singapore) are running the Amnesty International (AI) group in the school. AI has a vast network of over 10 million people who campaign for upholding

Gustavo Nakashita, Grade 12, Japanese-Brazilian This is my 13th year at ICS – I started in K5 in 2008. There’s never a dull moment at school as my friends are from all over the world. Though many of them have come and gone,
they’ve always been very kind and loyal, and really strive to excel in school, all of which helps with the learning experience. Also, the teachers are very passionate about their work and they make learning as enjoyable as possible. I’ve always been a Maths
person at heart. It’s rewarding to overcome a tough question by coming up with an answer on your own. Maths also teaches me ways to apply what I’ve learned to better describe and model the world around me. There are so many highlights of my time at school! One time in Grade 5, my friends and I had a reunion with our K5 teacher, which was very special for all of us. I also really enjoyed my Grade 9 school service trip, dubbed Week Without Walls. It was an incredibly fulfilling and enriching experience to travel overseas, serving communities in need alongside my classmates for a week straight. When I graduate, I plan on studying engineering in Canada or the UK but I haven’t decided on the job I want to pursue or where exactly I will live and work. I trust that opportunities will present themselves and it’ll be up to me to make the most of them.

School (Singapore)
Diana and Basim Al-Safau, German; Jack Levi (8) and Joy-Luna (6)
We’ve been in Singapore for two and a half years. Jack joined ICS in January 2021 and Luna joined in September 2021. Jack loves school, especially the science experiments. Although PE was partly suspended, Jack developed a new passion for sports and he’s now into basketball. He also loves the after-school activities – he gets to do sport right after school. This makes life easier for us because we don’t have to organise any more activities outside of school. An important aspect of this school is its Christian values. As a Christian family, we felt it was important for our children to grow up with Christian values and we’re very grateful that, besides an academic education, Biblical values are also taught at ICS. We consider this as the best prerequisite for a good future. We also have a special situation with Jack as he has type 1 diabetes. The school nurse, Jyl Neri, keeps an eye on him. As parents in such a situation, we need assurance that someone is taking care of our kids’ needs when we’re not around. Initially, we weren’t convinced about the American curriculum as we’re from Germany and everything is different. But the school’s Christian foundation and values were more valuable to us than the choice of curriculum. We haven’t regretted our choice and we’re very happy to be part of the ICS community where we’ve made new friends. We highly recommend the school for its academics and we’re grateful for the nice and helpful teachers.

Efosa and Adesuwa Obazee, Nigerian; Osazee (14) and Ivie (10)
International Community School (Singapore)
We’ve been in Singapore for four years. Osazee is currently in Grade 8 and Ivie in Grade 4 at International Community School. They will move to Grade 9 and Grade 5 respectively at the start of the school year in August 2022. Our experience has been rewarding and good so far. The teachers are friendly, professional, knowledgeable, approachable and always interested in both the academics and the wellbeing of the children. They know all the kids at ICS individually and ensure that each child receives the right level of engagement and support. There’s continuous communication about the kids’ learning and overall progress, and there’s always someone to answer any enquiries we may have. ICS has relatively small class sizes; we’ve found this to be a great advantage to our kids because they benefit from individualised learning and appropriate attention from their teachers and the school community. Ivie is enrolled in the Mandarin language class while Osazee has taken language classes in both Mandarin and Spanish. The school’s
rich diverse culture means that our kids have close friends from the US, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Canada, Europe and South America. There are very good facilities to cater to sports and other social engagements. Our kids really love the ECA programme, especially basketball and soccer, and they get a lot of pleasure from after-school sports. Parents are given the opportunity to be involved in various school activities and get to know each other, which has helped our family transition smoothly when we moved to Singapore. We highly recommend ICS to families who are looking for a school with committed excellent teachers in a rigorous academic environment and with good Christian values.
