JANUARY 2022 ANNUAL KIDS’ GUIDE
In The Classroom
International French School
Louis Lohse-Papillon, CM1 English (Grade 4), French-American I’ve been at IFS for seven years, since Preschool in the Petite Section. I’m currently in CM1 English, which means I learn in French one day and in English one day, with two teachers. I really like learning in two languages. At school, I enjoy the sports areas and how the cafeteria is outside all year long. The cafeteria is decorated specially for each holiday season and it makes everybody happy and excited! My favourite subject is Art because I love drawing and creating new characters, especially the evil ones! I make a lot of comic books in my spare time and I love reading graphic novels. I also love Music class and singing. Some highlights of my years at IFS were the trip to the Singapore Zoo in second grade. We got to climb up trees, see many animals and even camp there one night with four friends we had chosen! I remember my best friend Adam and I stayed up late that night listening to the
noise of the crickets. I also love that we get to wear costumes on Halloween and Carnival days – one year I came as Steve, the main Minecraft character. When I’m older, I hope to be a writer and illustrator!
FOUNDED: 1967 DATES: End of August to early July AGES: 2 to 18 years (Nursery 1 to Grade 12) SIZE: 2,800 students CURRICULUM: French Curriculum, taught in French and English; non-French speakers accepted until Grade 6

We’ve lived and worked in Singapore for over 10 years. Lula started in the Petite Section of IFS in April 2020 and is now in her third year. One of our top priorities is exposing our children to new languages and cultures from an early age. IFS Maternelle uses the Reggio Emilia methodology, which allows children to harness their interests through a relationship-driven environment. Saxon had a similar immersion experience when he was schooled in Italy in his early primary years so he had full confidence in this. Although Saxon is an advanced beginner in French, we don’t come from a French-speaking background. This meant we needed to partner with the teachers to make Lula’s immersion a success. The kids are able to ask questions and communicate in English as they come up to speed with French, so that helped Lula feel comfortable at the start. We learned with Lula using materials in French, working in sync with her Petite section teacher , who is also a trained linguist, to ensure that Lula had a fulfilling experience. All of Lula’s teachers in her three years at the school have offered a similar experience; we’ve seen her writing, reading and passion for art blossom in wonderful and unexpected ways. A number of our friends have also placed their children at IFS so there’s a growing group of kids from Australian and English expat families. We love that Lula has made many friends from different backgrounds. The teachers from France seem to be of an extremely high standard and the school is part of the international network of French schools (AEFE). We’re looking forward to excursions, end of-year plays, more sport and extracurricular activities restarting when COVID restrictions are relaxed. We’re confident this will make the school experience even richer and more exciting for Lula.

We started looking for schools when Eli was entering Elementary. We were pleasantly surprised when we visited the International French School – it offers both high-standard teaching quality and modern school facilities at a reasonable price. We also found out that, for several grades, children go on annual trips that are heavily subsidised and built into the tuition. Eli is now in his second year at IFS and we’re planning to send Emma there too. Eli’s teachers have been welcoming from day one and made sure that he adjusted quickly to the new environment as we’re a non-French speaking family. The FLSCO, which is like a private language tutor for kids, is included in the fees and helped Eli with learning French. Within a month in school, he was able to understand French, and in three months was able to use the language for daily conversation. There are a lot of mixed families at IFS, which added to the diversity in culture within the school and made our family feel very welcomed. The school’s facilities are comparable to Eli’s previous school. Eli can choose from different after-school sport and non-sport activities and holiday camps during big breaks at a very reasonable price. The school offers different curriculum pathways in the higher years. They have high academic standards throughout each level, which translates to high pass rates in the national exams. As a not-for-profit school, IFS is transparent with plans and budgets. Parents are invited to join the annual AGM to discuss various matters. We’re able to ask questions and understand more about the school’s future goals and current situation. This makes us feel more invested in the school. All in all, we have been very happy with the school.
