Need Some Wheels?

O ne advantage that living in Hong Kong offers is affordable domestic help. Some expats – especially singles or couples without children – find that amaid service once or twice a week is enough. But for others, particularly those with families, a full-time maid to help with cooking, cleaning, shopping, ironing and childcare can be a blessing. Most helpers in Hong Kong are from the Philippines or Indonesia and are diligent, conscientious women who are working to support their families back home.

Interior Tips: 3 WAYS TO BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

Dress up a balcony The best way to bring the outside in

Many people in Hong Kong don’t have the luxury of a home with an outdoor area – or, if they’re lucky, they have just a tiny balcony off the side of a high-rise. So we’ve asked two members of the Bowerbird team– owner PHILIPPAHAYDONand newdesigner JAMIEWILKIE – for advice on how to make the most of the space you have.

is to minimise the boundaries between your indoor and outdoor spaces; the spaces need to flow together, be connected visually and aesthetically, and be inviting and practical. If at all possible, finish the exterior flooring to match the interior flooring so the living room extends visually to the outdoors and vice versa. Use sliding or folding doors that appear frameless or are set into the floor and have no lip: if the surfaces inside and out are the same level, there is less physical barrier between the spaces. Regardless of the size of your outdoor space, even the smallest table and chair set can invite you out and bridge the divide. Alternatively, consider adding a low built-in seating area (with potential storage underneath), topped with long lounge cushions. Couple it with small garden stools that can double as seats or side tables to rest drinks on, a cute rug, some greenery and you’re good to go.

16

If space is particularly limited, consider a windowsill herb garden, vertical wall garden or terrariums. Lanterns and an interesting chandelier are other worthy considerations. Large mirrors on balcony walls can capture the view and add to the sense of space, especially if you’re living in a high-rise. Between the heat, humidity and air- conditioning, we’re lucky if we can keep fresh flowers looking respectable for more than two or three days. They do, however, soften a room and add that finishing touch, and silk flowers are a brilliant alternative. We love to mix flowers in the same way you would when picking flowers from a garden. Our favourite trick is to mix real and silk flowers and stand them in a clear glass vase with water.  For a natural beach look, beautiful nautical shells in glass frames or shadow boxes can make fantastic wall art. A piece of sea-fan coral under a cloche creates a lovely accent, and shells and coral grouped together on a sideboard or table, or on a shelf, can instantly add focus and a nautical flair to any room. Use a glass vase or bowl, pop in a candle, add some sand, place shells or starfish around the candle and place it on a side table, and again you have yourself a small accent piece. Lastly, whenever you’re on holidays, collect sand and shells from your trip and store them in apothecary jars – not only are they beautiful to look at, but they’re also a reminder of many wonderful family holidays. When it comes to soft furnishings, choose colours, patterns and fabrics that use natural tones or shapes that complement the view or outdoor environment. This is another easy way to achieve the connection between the outdoors and inside. Accessorise with natural elements

Go green! Using plants is one of the

Bowerbird is at Unit 5, Level 2, Oceanic Industrial Centre, 2 Lee Lok Street, Ap Lei Chau. 2552 2727 | bowerbird-home.com Think outside the box and turn ceramic wall planters into works of art. Cluster a few plants of varying heights and textures on a trunk or side table to create height and visual interest. If you have a vintage chair you enjoy looking at more than sitting in, consider using it as a plant stand to put both on display.

easiest ways to bring the outdoors in, especially if you’re living in a high-rise apartment: by placing potted plants or even herbs on a shelf or table, you can add freshness to the space. Bringing plants into your living environment is also an excellent way to purify your air. They work well in any interior by bringing in life and colour, and they can also make a home feel more lived in and relaxed.

MATERNITY COVER

Planning to have a baby in Hong Kong? If so, you’ll have plenty of things to consider, not least of which will be the issue of insurance. We asked the team at Bupa Global to answer some common questions on the topic of maternity cover.

up to full cover on normal delivery and medically essential caesarean section. Both plans cover pre- and post-natal treatment, andmaternity complications. Children can be born into policies

How much does it cost to deliver a baby in Hong Kong? It may cost up to HK$150k in a private hospital, and a Caesarean section will cost even more. Don’t forget to factor in the costs of pre- and post-natal check ups. What are some of the things to keep in mind when it comes to medical plan coverage when having a baby? When it comes to maternity cover, you may want to check: • if there is a waiting period in the policy; • if the policy covers the medical costs in case of maternity and childbirth complications; • if the baby will be born into the policy without underwriting. Does Bupa offer different policies for maternity cover? Bupa Global Elite and Ultimate plans both offer maternity cover, providing

without underwriting too. Do the policies cover

In general, why is private medical insurance important for an expat in Hong Kong? How is a global plan different to a local plan? Privatemedical insurance provides you with access to a network of hospitals and clinics for treatment, giving you peace of mind so you don’t need to worry about the unexpected health costs if you have an accident or get diagnosed with a serious illness. A global medical insurance plan generally has a higher annual policy limit with richer benefits compared to a local plan. A global plan gives you the choice to have treatment at home or abroad, so you can go back to your home country for treatment if preferred. Also, if you’re moving back home, you may be allowed to take your health plan with you, which may save you the hassle of switching plans or going through underwriting again. We advise you to speak with your insurance advisor for details.

For more information on Bupa Global’s insurance plans, visit bupaglobal.com/en/international- health-insurance (select Hong Kong as country of residence). • Corporate insurance is there up until your time with the company ends. This may leave you with the need to seek private insurance at an older age or time of need, by which time premiums may be higher or there may be exclusions for pre-existing sickness. However, a second insurance with worldwide cover can give you peace of mind that wherever you go, you’ll be well looked after. ultrasounds, extended hospital stays if medically necessary, or certified nurse midwives for delivery at home or a birth centre? Yes, these treatments and care options are all covered by our Elite and Ultimate plans. Also, the two family-friendly plans can cover children under the age of 10 and 16 respectively with no extra cost (two per paying parent; subject to underwriting). I have corporate insurance; do you still suggest I get a second insurance plan as part of a family package? Many of our clients look at second health insurance as a top-up, for the following reasons: • A private health insurance plan often provides a richer range of benefits with higher annual policy limits. You can consider choosing a higher deductible or co-insurance when taking out a second insurance to reduce the premium.

GUARDIANSHIP Some valuable advice on the topic of appointing guardians for your children from the team at Phoenix Wills , all expats and parents themselves.

Your most valuable assets It’s hard to imagine but should something happen to both parents, children under 18 (provided they’re not married) will need a guardian. They can be appointed by a deed of guardianship, but it’s more common to make the appointment in a will. Ideally, guardians should be appointed in a will and a deed, as the deed can give guardians immediate access to the children, whereas a will usually takes a few days to present to the courts. If there is no guardian appointed, one must be found through a court process, and the laws of the country you’re living in at the time will apply. Temporary measures As an expat, you should consider appointing temporary guardians who also live in Hong Kong, preferably close friends or colleagues, to take care of the children until the appointed guardians arrive, which could take some time. Children will only be allowed out of the country with legal guardians, whether appointed by you in a will and a deed, or by the courts if no appointment of guardians has been made. Domestic helpers can be named as guardians, but you must remember that if you’re no longer here, your helper will lose her visa and the HK government will demand

in a fairly recent case in Hong Kong, Social Services were swift in picking up two orphaned children in their home and taking them into care – meaning a local orphanage – because the parents had not made arrangements for guardianship. In such a situation, it’s up to the Hong Kong courts to appoint the guardian. This process takes time, and all family members on both sides are considered and consulted; any disagreement results in the children remaining in the care of the Hong Kong government, with limited visitation rights, until the dispute is resolved. It’s worth noting that, by default, the father’s family has the strongest chance of being granted guardianship! You may have made private arrangements with a close friend to whisk the children off to avoid this, but you could be putting your friends at risk with possible kidnapping charges. The only way to ensure that your children don’t end up in the system for even the shortest time is to legally appoint permanent and temporary guardians.

that she either finds another job or leaves Hong Kong. You can, however, state that you would like your helper to stay with the children in your home until their permanent guardians arrive. Home away from home As children get older, the role of a temporary guardian becomes more significant. Assuming the child has a permanent ID card, he or she may be better off staying in Hong Kong, particularly if they’re in the middle of important school studies. The appointment of guardians, legal or temporary, is still valid but the temporary guardian may now have a more significant role to play. Younger children will nearly always go back to grandparents, or aunties and uncles. But the “middle aged” kids are another matter; a 14 year-old in the middle of IB or O Levels may not appreciate being separated from friends, having just lost both parents, and may also have been away from the family back home for a long time. The ties may not be as strong as they once were, and Hong Kong may well be the only home the children have known. Worst-case scenario What happens if both parents pass away without having made a legal appointment of guardians? Tragically,
