Spiritual Japan Yamabushi were traditionally Japanese hermits believed to be endowed with supernatural powers; they’ve also served as spiritual mountain guides for pilgrims since medieval times. For the first time in 1,300 years, non-Japanese visitors can now attend a Yamabushi training programme, aligned with the simple philosophy of placing yourself in nature and feeling, not thinking, in order to rejuvenate your true self. Held in sacredmountains in Yamagata prefecture, the three- and five-day Yamabushido programmes encompass everything from waterfall meditations to walks through nature.
