What’s Kids? for Best kindergarten
DR COLLEEN DRISNER spent three years as Headof Student Support and Wellbeing at the Canadian International School (CIS) before assuming her current role as Primary School Principal at the Lakeside c ampu s t h i s ye a r. Originally from Canada, she has also spent 16 years in China as a teacher, IB coordinator and pr incipal at an international school, and as a teacher trainer. She shares her insights on what to look for in a kindergarten. What do you think is the most important factor in early childhood education? Learning is a social endeavour. The foundation for success lies in the development of a student’s personal, social and emotional wellbeing. To foster a child’s academic abilities, you have to be able to “see” the whole child – then you’ll know best how to encourage them to learn. What should parents consider when choosing a kindergarten? Look for a focus on helping children “learn how to learn” by guiding them to develop their own voice and interest in learning. This helps to develop positive attitudes, habits and learning styles, which in turn develops strong foundational skills such as numeracy and literacy.

LIFE & FAMILY
What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning? I recently completed my doctorate in educational leadership with Gonzaga University; it took me about three years. For fun, I love reading spy novels by Daniel Silva, spending time with my three children and husband, and baking anything chocolate. I recently tried my hand at making fondant – it’s a lot like play-based learning!
Purposeful play and inquiry-based learning engages children and triggers their curiosity, allowing them to hone their critical thinking skills, excel at collaborative work and solve problems creatively. For example, with water play, they can learn all about volume and capacity through a hands-on process. A school’s physical setup also has a huge impact on how children learn and communicate with the world around them. At our Lakeside campus, there’s a dedicated kindergarten wing where classrooms spill out into large, open learning pods. These are spaces where students can do hands-on activities or interact with their peers at exhibitions and celebrations. At the Tanjong Katong campus, kindergarten classrooms connect directly to the school’s Outdoor Discovery Centre, allowing students to easily engage and learn from the environment around them. What inspired you to work in education? My parents had their own business but my mum always had a passion for education; that inspired me to pursue a career as an educator. My career has spanned from teaching students in kindergarten to those studying in IB diploma. This extensive experience has allowed me to oversee all aspects of a school, and I strongly believe that student wellbeing is at the core of learning. What’s the best part about being a kindergarten principal? I love seeing the sense of wonder in our younger students as they explore the world around them through play, inquiry and self-discovery. They embrace the learning experiences put before them. Since everything is exciting to a child, they can find and make connections in a way that adults might miss.

LANGUAGE WELL Keen for your child to acquire another language the right way? LEARNING A
BY PATRICEA CHOW
What else? CIS was one of the first international schools in Singapore to offer the Chinese-English bilingual programme. The school currently has 47 classes in the programme, from pre kindergarten to Grade 6. In August 2021, it began offering mathematics and science in Chinese for students in Grades 7 and 8, to ensure that multilingual language is continued. Meanwhile, the French-English programme was extended to Grade 5 in August 2021 and will be extended to Grade 6 in August 2022 (subject to enrolment). The programme has continually improved from input from bilingual experts who visit the school annually. The results of the bilingual programmes speak for themselves: • In 2019, CIS students outperformed all other international and local school students in Singapore in the Youth Chinese test. • After just one year in the programme, kindergarten students with no prior knowledge of Chinese can accurately understand and follow instructions and communicate clearly with their teacher. By the end of Grade 1, after two years in the programme, students can communicate confidently and read simple books in Chinese without the help of pinyin. Find out more Interested to knowmore about CIS’s bilingual programmes? Register for an upcoming Open House session (cis.edu.sg/admissions/open house). You’ll hear from the Head of School and the Chinese-English bilingual programme principal and have the chance to peek into classrooms to see what learning looks like in the popular bilingual programme.
Having a second language gives learners a deeper understanding of another culture and provides them with future-ready skills to solve problems in an ever changing world. Students in the bilingual language programmes – Chinese-English and French-English – at the Canadian International School (CIS) learn languages with a unique 50:50 model. The 50:50 model Every day, CIS students spend an equal amount of time attending classes in English and in either Chinese or French. This is achieved with two teachers in the classroom, one speaking English and the other speaking Chinese or French. Students must communicate with teachers in the target language; this way, they learn without translation. For example, during a French-English bilingual STEAM class, Grade 5 students cook and learn in French. This involves understanding the vocabulary needed for food preparation and cooking and reading recipe instructions in French. The students imagine that they’re real French chefs in a restaurant in France! They gather and sort their ingredients, maintain order in the kitchen and communicate in French. Some even get inspired to keep on cooking at home. In this way, the culture of the language is integrated into the learning too. By being introduced to different cultural concepts and contexts in Chinese or French, the students’ learning becomes more memorable, and they become effectively bilingual, biliterate and bicultural.
A word from a teacher and students…
Canadian International School has two campuses: • Lakeside campus: 7 Jurong West Street 41 | 6467 1732 • Tanjong Katong campus: 371 Tanjong Katong Road | 6345 1573 cis.edu.sg I t ’s fun as we get to explore and help others with knowing another language. We’re not stuck in one way of doing things. We get to know more and look at things in different ways in two languages. Bea and Millie, Grade 2 Chinese English bilingual students When I have students who are only starting to learn French, I like to make them see all the fun and positive sides of learning the language. One of the ways is through reading. I choose interesting, funny or intriguing picture books and read tons of stories to them. They become very interested and motivated to access the language, and to be able to read the books or retell the stories by themselves. Kayla Carneiro, Grade 1-2 bilingual French teacher

LIFE & FAMILY
We take a look at how one of Singapore’s prominent international schools is equipping students with essential skills for the 21st century. Did you know that the Canadian International School (CIS) was the first school in Singapore to offer STEAM? That was back in 2014, when it recognised the important life skills that such an approach can provide for students, no matter where their passions might lie. At CIS, STEAM is a schoolwide interdisciplinary approach that integrates science, technology, environmental studies, arts and mathematics. According to the school, it teaches students to draw conceptual understanding from each discipline and take it a step further by applying those concepts in a real-world context. Learning essential skills STEAM isn’t just about using technology or learning science and robotics – it’s an engaging, hands-on and inquiry-based framework that can be tailored for all ages and types of students, and integrated across different disciplines. The CIS team says that the approach helps students develop important essential skills for whatever workforce they may enter. As they work on projects, they collaborate with classmates, conduct research, problem solve, test possible solutions and think creatively and critically. They learn to understand that the challenges they face can’t be solved through one answer alone; instead, they need to think creatively and approach problems from multiple perspectives. Engaging and hands-on STEAM also lets students engage with hands-on learning. Pre-kindergarten students at CIS recently explored how to convert a toilet roll into a workable torch, while Grade 1 students integrated science, maths and art as they learnt about forces, motion and design when building their own moveable toy. Another project saw students working in pairs to generate current from batteries and to convert it to kinetic energy for a “drawbot”, so that the bots move by themselves. This was a fun way to build understanding of energy transfer and thermodynamics. Meanwhile, Grade 6 students used 3D computer software to create scale models to study the maths and science behind natural phenomena on earth. Students also get to work in state-of-the-art modular and flexible maker spaces that allow teachers to tailor the room to the project and students’ needs. The cupboards deliberately have no doors – available resources are displayed clearly to spark curiosity. Full STEAM Ahead! BY PATRICEA CHOW
A word from a student I’ve been working in the STEAM lab to help me with my personal projects. I also successfully organised a workshop with Mr Deir (CIS STEAM Coordinator at Lakeside). Over the years, my projects have become more complicated! This year, I built a model elevator that could listen to voice instructions, using coding with Python and Arduino. Through it all, Mr Deir and the lab were there to help me. Noah, Grade 6

Anuj and Gitanjali Sohum, Singaporean; Saarth (9) and Aadya (6) We evaluated almost all the IB schools and found that CIS had the best bilingual IB academic programmes and most well-balanced and diverse international student community in Singapore. The school encourages inclusive participation and welcomes new ideas and initiatives. Our family joined CIS in January 2021 and, within a few months, Saarth had the opportunity to perform at the David Foster Theatre for UN day and in the school’s talent show. The performances were streamed virtually so we could watch from home. The principals and classroom teachers also gave full support for his plan to start a new CIS cricket league and for Aadya to engage with librarians to plan her upcoming online short-story telling sessions. Our children love the warm, caring and friendly community at CIS and they love meeting the school principals every morning at drop-off time. THE SCHOOL SAYS… CIS prepares students from over 70 nations to own their future through a rigorous IB curriculum that blends an inquiry-based approach with academic subjects and real-world applications. What’s new? Our bilingual programmes expanded in August 2021. French bilingual now includes Grade 5, while Chinese bilingual has expanded to select subjects in secondary school. The new Lakeside kindergarten wing opens in mid-2022; it’ll feature a learn-to-swimpool, learning pods, black box theatre and huge Outdoor Discovery Centre. CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

facilities are exceptional! The library is one of my favourite places to study; it provides fantastic resources to learn and conduct research and is extremely beautiful. The impressive facilities at the gymnasium allow our “Huskies” to excel in various sports. I aspire to study medicine and become a neurology specialist. As an aspiring physician, my favourite subject is Biology. It gives me insight into how the myriad body systems work together to keep us functioning and also helps me understand the fascinating, multifaceted elements of our environment and its inhabitants. CIS has allowed me to hone my curiosity and develop a deep-rooted desire to solve pressing neurological and scientific issues crippling our society today. Amajor highlight of school for me was my Grade 9 excursion to Sedili Besar, Malaysia. It allowed me to experience life away from the bustle of the city while in the company of my best friends. It’s a CIS memory that I hold very close to my heart.

WHAT’S NEW Talkwith anExpert The team at Psych Connect has seen a continuous increase in individuals seeking services for mental health issues (anxiety, depression, grief) and presenting with physiological symptoms – it goes to show how physical and emotional health are intimately intertwined. Led by Dr Sanveen Kang, the specialist psychology clinic is the first in Singapore to incorporate the sensory motor system into psychotherapy; as such, it’s recognised as having psychologists who are preferred by many leading medical practitioners. The staff are also equipped to support clients with conditions made worse by pre-existing mood problems such as dermatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic congestion syndrome and tics. psychconnect.sg

The school says this approach empowers the faculty to meet students where they are and help them move forward. Speaking of moving forward, six of their elementary schoolers donned hard hats and safety hats on 6 September last year to hurl clumps of dirt into the air with the help of shovels. This marked the groundbreaking of the new elementary school – and a first look at what’s coming up for SAS! sas.edu.sg

APRIL 2022 EXPAT LIVING: PRESCHOOL GUIDE
PRESCHOOL GUIDE
International School
Erin and Mark Broeske, American; Mae (8) and Henry (5)
We moved to Singapore in October 2021. Henry has been in Junior Kindergarten since then and Mae is in Grade 3 now. Back in the US, our kids were thriving in an IB programme and CIS was recommended as one of the top IB programmes in Singapore. Our biggest concern was how well and quickly our kids would adjust to new lives in Singapore, especially in the middle of the school year. Our son is an incredibly active kid but the calm and assured demeanour of his teacher Ms Kamal has kept him focused. CIS’s curriculum centres on the student’s curiosity, so Henry is constantly engaged. The small class sizes ensure that he’s getting plenty of attention and the intimate community has helped him make many friends in the short amount of time. CIS has been instrumental in giving our kids the incredible opportunity to grow and learn through immersing them in other cultures at the school. The student body is amazingly diverse and Henry is surrounded by kids from all parts of the world.
CIS has also helped him acclimate to Singaporean culture and taught him – and us – about cultural events like Deepavali and Chinese New Year, which we had little exposure to in the US. Although he’s not in any of the bilingual programmes, Henry is learning a lot from the daily Chinese lessons and he loves to teach us at dinner what he has learned. CIS classes use the entire campus in learning, from using iPad cameras to document the world outside to testing projects designed by the high school students. As parents, we get to see all of this through the photos and videos Henry’s teachers share every week. We love the quality education he’s getting at CIS and would recommend the school to other families.

JUNE 2022 EXPAT LIVING: SCHOOL GUIDE
SCHOOL GUIDE
Caroline and Walid Gherbi, French; Nelia (8) and Wael (6)
Canadian International School
We’ve lived overseas for 10 years and arrived in Singapore a year ago. Both our children attend school at CIS Lakeside. Nelia is in the G3 French bilingual programme andWael will start it too next year in G1. Before arriving here, we were looking on the internet for an international school with the IB programme and a French bilingual curriculum. Canadian International School was the only one in Singapore to offer this. In the programme, children are exposed 50 percent of the time to French and 50 percent of the time in English. The teachers are native. This means that our children are immersed in a double culture, which goes beyond just learning a language the way one could do at any language centre. We arrived in the middle of the pandemic so adapting wasn’t easy. We were fortunate that the
school had authorisation for new families to visit the campus and meet with the teachers. Everyone was kind and took the time to explain the school organisation to us. This was a relief, especially because we came from having school online for almost two years. The school facilities and the extracurricular activities offered are worthy of great international schools. Kindness and diversity are a priority here. We would recommend the school to families who are looking for a school with international standards and a strong language programme.
