OCTOBER 2021 ADVERTORIAL

LIFE & FAMILY

ANDREW NOAKES is new to Singapore, where he has commenced the academic year as the new Head Master at Brighton College. Originally from the UK, Andrew has an MA in Education, and has worked in the field for 23 years. We asked him about the year ahead. Education ThePull of BY PATRICEA CHOW

Whatmadeyoudecideona career ineducation? I taught English in France during a gap year and again in my third year of university whilst reading French and European Studies. I loved the experience but upon graduation, I was offered a very good opportunity at a large Fortune 500 company in the USA. However, I decided I loved teaching muchmore; so I made the switch and I’ve never looked back. I’m looking forward to ensuring that we remain best placed to offer our pupils an outstanding education. There are some fascinating developments in educational technology, which means approaches at schools are changing all the time. For example, artificial intelligence in education is currently having the biggest impact in changing how teachers teach and children learn. I look forward to helping the school develop further in areas such as these, so that more children can enjoy their learning, and develop their personalities, curiosity, confidence and kindness both now and for later in life. What would you say is the best thing about being a student at Brighton? Being known by everyone – classmates and teachers. What’s your favourite spot of the school? Our “labs”! There’s a proper full Science lab and also The Maker Lab where we have virtual reality headsets, which means we can do things like travel virtually through the heart. What changes can the school look forward to with you at the helm?

What would make you excited about studying at Brighton?

Lessons! No, really – when I arrived, I asked the pupils and this is what they said! The older children were telling the younger ones what they could look forward to and most of their examples were lesson activities. If you weren’t in education, you would be... I don’t think I could be doing anything else. If I wasn’t in a school, I think I would be working for the Voluntary Service Overseas or a similar organisation. If I absolutely had to choose something very different, then maybe a policeman. When you’re not busy with school stuff, you like to… Go walking or boating and watch live sport – I used to be a season ticket holder at Bedford Blues Rugby Club and also at West Ham for many years. Also, seeing family and friends – whenever possible, of course! A final word on education? I like the fact that no one can ever take your education away from you, which speaks volumes. Most importantly, I think it tells us how valuable it is to develop one’s understanding and, secondly, how important it is to make the most of every opportunity we have to learn. Then, of course, we need to balance these with the need to ensure children have memorable and happy childhoods; who said being a parent or teacher was easy?!

Learn & Play

BRIGHTON COLLEGE (SINGAPORE)

THE SCHOOL SAYS… We provide an ambitious and challenging education, based on the English National Curriculum, in the nurturing and personalised environment of a small preparatory school, where each child is individually known by the whole school community. The school’s combination of size, curriculum, exceptional staff, outstanding heritage and excellent facilities provides families with an offering in Singapore that is one of a kind. What’s new? Brighton College (Singapore) is the fifth international school in the Brighton College family of schools. Brighton College UK was founded over 150 years ago and is one of the UK’s leading independent schools. Brighton College is twice winner of the Sunday Times Independent School of the Year and in November 2020 was awarded the title of England’s Independent School of the Decade.

Andrew Noakes, Head Master Brighton College is a Prep School that prides itself on knowing every single pupil really well. Our class sizes and teacher-to-pupil ratio make sure this can happen. Ask a pupil

the best thing about the school and they’ll likely recount experiments with rockets or virtual reality journeys through the heart in Science, or becoming a scavenger hunter in English or a superhero in French lessons. Our pupils are curious, they enjoy discovering and they feel confident and resilient enough to try and to learn from their attempts, whether successful or not. Our atmosphere and culture would likely set us apart, too; we’re a truly purposeful and friendly school. Pupils, teachers and families are kind, we support and look after each other and work together to make a positive difference to a child and society, both now and for the future. It’s very important to us that children get the best possible education and the best possible childhood. A multitude of opportunities based on an accelerated curriculum and exciting extracurricular programme means we can give our pupils many chances for that to be the case.

WHAT’S NEW

New Classes If you have a child going to Pre-Prep or Prep, Brighton College (Singapore) will be opening new classes in January 2022 and is currently accepting applications until the end of October. This dedicated school for ages 18 months to 11 years places a huge focus on the foundation years of learning; the aim is to nurture students in a warm environment that supports their academic growth. Tanglin Trust School has launched Tanglin ’ s Forest School Programme (FSP) for nursery-age children. First developed in Europe, this model brings learning outdoors so children can gain creative, personal and social skills, and an appreciation of the natural world. The programme will complement the after-school co-curricular forest adventure programme where children in Reception to Year 2 experience outdoor learning within the greenery of Wessex Estate. The FSP also connects effectively with the Curiosity Approach, for which the school is the first in Asia to receive accreditation. This approach encourages children to use authentic materials, appreciate the natural environment and use learning spaces as the third teacher. Tanglin Trust School ’ s FSP is run on a site within the school grounds by qualified Level 3 teachers and facilitators who ensure that all activities are safely managed and age-appropriate. Impressive Scores

With a 100 percent pass rate in this year’s IB, the Class of 2021 has achieved Stamford American I n t e r n a t i o n a l School’s strongest performance yet. Nineteen students scored 40 points or higher – considered

an outstanding achievement – with two of them scoring 44 out of the full 45 points. The school’s average IB score was 35, three points higher than a year ago, while the exam average of 5.6 was also higher than any previous years, with 29 percent of students achieving the rigorous bilingual IB diploma. Meanwhile, Stamford’s Advanced Placement results recorded an average score of 3.3, and over 70 percent of scores were a 3 or above, considered high academic standing by universities around the world. sais.edu.sg

In The Classroom

Brighton College (Singapore)

Maela Robert Ong,

Year 5, Singaporean

I’ve been at Brighton for one term. One of the things that I like about the school is that there are three break times each day . During this time, I’ll play with my friends in the Bubble (playing area). Occasionally, I go to the field

and play soccer with my friends. I also like the school’s suggestion box. All students can give suggestions on many things, such as school activities and how to run certain activities. I’m very happy that my voice gets heard by the teachers and student committee – they will take my suggestion together with the rest, discuss whether it’s a good suggestion and how we can improve from there. I enjoy all subjects as the lessons taught are interactive. For example, we work in groups during lessons to learn, ask questions and solve the problems given. My major highlight of school is the friends I’ve made. My classmates have been very kind and welcoming since the day I stepped into school. We really care for each other and I’m very happy coming to school every day to learn and play with them. When I graduate, I want to be a teacher. The teachers who are teaching me at Brighton College inspire me. I believe that I can make a difference to other pupils in the future.

Sophie and Sam Flint, British; twins Arlo and George (4), and Rory (1)

We’ve lived in Singapore for 11 years. Arlo and George started in pre-nursery last March and are currently in Nursery. Rory will join his brothers this August for the new school year. Since starting here, we’ve seen the confidence of both Arlo and George increase. Arlo had a mild stutter that disappeared quickly and George began to engage with people much more than he had previously. Amongst other things, we attribute these developments to the kind and supportive teaching environment at Brighton College (Singapore). We like the focus on the British National Curriculum, in case we ever move back to the UK. The teachers encourage a love of learning, prompting students to question things and explore the world around them. The boys clearly love going to school and are challenged and engaged every day. The boys are also exposed to a wide range of activities including dance, drama and PE. We like the “small prep school” feel of the school and that there is access to the wider Early Learning Village facilities such as the outdoor playgrounds and swimming pool. Each student is known individually by the teachers, support staff and the school community; they take a genuine interest in the students’ wellbeing. When the boys are greeted personally by their teachers, it makes them feel important and very much part of the school’s community. We also enjoy receiving regular updates on their learning journey through the online portal. We have had a wonderful experience with Brighton College. We recommend the school to families especially if they’re looking for quality British-based education with caring and experienced teachers, as well as a growing and welcoming community of students and parents.

Samantha and Killian Tracey, British and Irish; Summer (7) and Max (5)

Both Summer and Max joined Brighton College (Singapore) at the beginning of the school year in August 2021, which was also when we moved fromHong Kong to Singapore. Friends had recommended the school to us. The interview process gave us a strong feel for how nurturing the school would be, alongside the brilliant academic foundation that they provide. We’ve been blown away by the school. Brighton has the warmth and intimacy of a small school while our children can benefit from facilities that you’d expect from a much larger entity. Our children came from an IB system previously. We’ve been super impressed by the fantastic job their teachers have done getting them up to speed with the English system. The school community has been very welcoming, too – our children felt settled and part of the family straight away. Without question, we recommend Brighton to other families, and we’ve done so to many friends!
